The Modern Bed: A Simple, Elegant Bedroom Centerpiece

Ranked #11,782 in Home & Garden, #190,844 overall

The joy of simple beds

What do you think about when you talk about modern beds? Some say coziness, while others say rest. Well, whichever of these words come to mind, one thing is for certain: comfort remains the one overriding criterion in a person's choice of what bed to buy. It's only natural since the bed is the furniture on which you recover strength for the day ahead.

Modern Bed Technology

A lovely modern platform bed with an Asian teak constructionAdvances in technology is making it possible for furniture designers and manufacturers to set comfort as the top concern when it comes to beds. This doesn't mean, however, that modern beds are devoid of other qualities. Today's generation of beds is simple yet elegant in design, the real mark of contemporary furniture. These beds are also sturdy without sacrificing comfort.

The modern bed is very different from the beds of yesteryear that depended a lot on springs to hold the mattress aloft. The beds of the present are usually platforms, or flat surfaces that is kept aloft by a hollow wooden box with slats that support the mattress. This system does away with the often-fragile box-spring, a wooden frame full of springs and covered by a thin fabric.

Asian-Inspired

This class of bed has, as its name implies, a platform that is wider than the mattress it supports. This means that there is some space left near the edges of the platform that can be used as extra seating. The bed's platform is only a few inches from the ground.

There are a few modern beds similar to Japanese platform beds that have drawers built into their frames, while others have similar storage compartments tucked into their headboards or footboards. These beds are called storage platform beds, and even the space-saving trundle bed belongs to this category. It is necessary to point out, though, that some beds don't have foot-boards or headboards.

Size Matters

For bigger bedrooms, it is suggested that you go for larger beds, like the platform bed queen, which can accommodate at least two persons. Don't worry about their designs as these beds are equally elegant as other modern beds. Remember that being bigger doesn't necessarily make them uglier.

Relax with a New Bed

A charming storage bedWhat enters your mind when having a discussion about beds? Relaxation, naturally! Being the centerpiece of every bedroom, the room in your house where you can forget all your worries and rest, makes the bed a prime consideration when choosing furniture. A few modern bed designs are borrowed from Asian sources. Take, for example, Japanese platform beds. For larger bedrooms, it is recommended that you get bigger beds, such as the platform bed queen.

What do you think about leather beds? Are they "in" or you preffer beds with wood frame?

Well, personally I prefer classic wood frames. They're really lovely-looking and of course they have that "warm, natural wood feel." I suppose, to some extent, my appreciation for wood furniture is rooted largely in nostalgia.

That being said, leather bed frames are definitely what's "in," so far as I can tell. Some of the houses I've recently remodeled have specifically requested leather bed frames for their modern-style bedrooms. And according to my friend's sales numbers (he runs a furniture store that specializes in modern stuff - check it out at http://www.platformbedsonline.com ), leather beds are a growing trend that probably isn't going out of fashion anytime soon.
