I think the tradition is so lovely especially in modern times when people are so rushed and out of touch with each other. Taking the time to send out holiday cards lets people know they are in your thoughts with a warm message of cheer.

There's just something about getting a card or letter in the mail from friends and family; it just seems so much more special than an email or post one of the social networks. I think it's the tactile quality of being able to hold a card in your hands and look at it on a whim plus the fact that someone actually took the time and effort to choose a card, write a message and mail it. In this digital age, I hope people will continue to embrace the art of the handwritten note. Receiving Christmas cards always makes me smile!

The tradition of sending Christmas cards originated in Victorian England with the exchange of handmade cards given to loved ones. In 1843, Sir Henry Cole commissioned John Calcott Horsley to create an illustration for a Christmas card, had them printed and the commercial Christmas card was born. The tradition gained huge popularity in the United States in 1875 when a German immigrant named Louis Prang published the first line of Christmas cards in the United States. The tradition spread around the world and today, billions of Christmas cards are sent out each year. Traditionally most Christmas cards featured religious scenes, but today Christmas cards come in all shapes and sizes and feature a variety of fun and festive artwork.
