Modern Dance, American Roots, Evolving Contemporary Dance
In its infancy, modern dance was grown by great dancers, choreographers, and teachers such as Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, Lester Horton, Martha Graham, and Merce Cunningham.
Along came other great innovators like Alvin Ailey, Twyla Tharp and Pilobolus. More continue to grow.
Modern dance, like modern painting or music, moved experimentally from classical to more contemporary modes.
The early modern dance looks derived ranged from Greek chorus-like to the Vogue quality costuming in motion of Martha Graham. While modern dance great Alvin Ailey choreographed modern motion, he told historical stories like his famed "Revelation."
Titles of dance performance moved from Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, grand opera style, to concept words, ideas, themes, simple nouns verbs, and poetry. Technique varied from the turned out, rounded, highly regimented ballet to parallel, straight positions and configurations.
Yet often balletic movements found their way into modern dance, as if modern were an extension of dance as opposed to representing a formal break with classical methods.
Let's take a journey into modern dance demonstrating these developments by examining photos and videos, and exploring modern dance development over time. The bridge to hip hop is a natural progression in contemporary dance artists.
Modern Dance, spun off from the ballet
Look for similarities to classical dance, but with modern lines
The school of dance known as Modern Dance broke out on its own from ballet early in the 1900s as a unique art form. Early on, modern dance told stories, narratives without words, like the ballet classics. The modern dance use of the body was an outgrowth of ballet technique, breaking some rules and stretching the boundaries of stage dance in new directions.
Note the importance of line, interdependence of bodies, and the balance of the visual sculpture. It is a balletic pas de deux, but using different technique producing different human lines and interactions.
Yet the human body moves within nature's limits. Shakespeare proclaimed, there is nothing new under the sun. In the sense that the human body is the "musical instrument" played, there are only so many tones, and all dance amounts to rearrangement.

Agnes Di Mille
What is so different between classical ballet and Agnes Di Mille?
Just No Tuttu? Hardly
Ballet dancers pursue the "perfect turnout," of the legs from the hips aligning the whole leg to the foot. Ballet technique uses outward rotation in the hip socket in coordination with posture. Notice how Agnes' is differently aligned at the hip and shoulder joints in a position know as "parallel."
In this photo, we might note similarity between both ballet and modern dance, the use of releve and the elongated foot. One can note a variety of similarities, but many can be chalked up to the limitations of the human body and imagination. Use of the flexed foot developed quickly from there.
Modern dance became recognized among dancers and the public as technique of its own, developing a language of terms, standards, and form. In a sense, the art was "formalized" much like ballet, tap, and ballroom.

Beach Birds for Camera
This unusual piece is representative of Cunningham's work. This performance was specially arranged to be filmed rather than staged for a venue. It is filmed in studio. The study of birds is particularly interesting for its lines and tempo.

The Men who Danced
Several early developers and innovators were men.
Many associated with Joseph Pilates.
Yes, the original "pilates."

Ted Shawn
An oustanding account of male dance innovators
A Favorite Book
"The Men who Danced" chronicles early male modern dance. Ted Shawn had an all male dance company at one time with occasional appearances by women.
Nevertheless, Shawn also partnered with some of the early women modern dancers, especially, the famed Ruth St. Denis.
Shawn's troupe was high in testosterone in style, very athletic, and acrobatic. This is a great resource to help you put together the oral tradition of Modern Dance, learning from these earlier performers and choreographers.
Twyla Tharp
Contemporary Choreographer, Dancer
Tharp has integrated ballet, sports, war, historical era themes among others with bold use of music ranging from "Hair" to silence, to Billy Joel, and even this set using Frank Sinatra.
The Creative Habit
Tharp on the process of creating art
Get one and read it every once in a while. I do. Every artist in every discipline should keep it on hand.
The rest are also superior reads and resources.
