ATLAS SHRUGGED by Ayn Rand
THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J.R.R. Tolkien
ATLAS SHRUGGED by Ayn Rand
I re-read it every summer. I can just pick up the book and flip to any page and start reading - there is meaning everywhere you read. A number of years ago I bought 50 copies and hand one out to anyone I meet who I think has a mind and maturity ready to go to a higher level. There is truly no comparison in literature or philosophy. An absolute must-read.
Atlas Shrugged
Amazon Price: $8.99 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
Used Price: $7.27
This book is so well written, it's boggling. the immense planning of plot, character development, thematic and personal moral conveyances that went into all of her works displays her dedication to her beliefs as both an author and philosopher. it is a plot driven, intellectual novel that deserves its length
THE FOUNTAINHEAD by Ayn Rand
The Fountainhead (Centennial Edition Hardcover)
Amazon Price: $19.72 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
Never have I read a novel that made me think as much as "The Fountainhead." I find that the philosophical ideas presented in this novel are easy to grasp and are relevant (to a certain degree) to how society functions. It made me realize that having mediocre standards and being ignorant of what I truly want/believe is the biggest crime to myself.
BATTLEFIELD EARTH by L. Ron Hubbard
Battlefield Earth
Amazon Price: $6.99 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
This book is an epic spanning several universes, starting humbly in a dirty section of a used-up planet where only a few survivors are left of the original inhabitants and these don't dare come out of hiding...This is Earth in the year 3000. Suspense, intense battle action, romance...it's all there.
One of the very best.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Lord of the Rings Book and Bookend Gift Set
Amazon Price: $1,850.00 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()

Now millions of filmgoers have embraced the blockbuster motion picture trilogy that has fired the imaginations of a new generation.
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee
To Kill a Mockingbird
Amazon Price: $5.55 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
I just finished this book a few moments ago, and I am completely awed by this story. Harper Lee has done an excellent job bringing this 1930s Alabama childhood to life. I can see why To Kill a Mockingbird has won the Pulitzer Prize, garnered an Academy Award for the movie version, and ultimately become a timely classic enjoyed by many generations.
1984 by George Orwell
Nineteen Eighty-Four
Amazon Price: $6.98 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
It's 1984 in London, a city in the new überstate of Oceania, which contains what was once England, Western Europe and North America. Our hero, Winston Smith works in the Ministry of Truth altering documents that contradict current government statements and opinions. Winston begins to remember the past that he has worked so hard to destroy, and turns against The Party. Even Winston's quiet, practically undetectable form of anarchism is dangerous in a world filled with thought police and the omnipresent two-way telescreen. He fears his inevitable capture and punishment, but feels no compulsion to change his ways.
ULYSSES by James Joyce
Ulysses has been labeled dirty, blasphemous, and unreadable. In a famous 1933 court decision, Judge John M. Woolsey declared it an emetic book--although he found it sufficiently unobscene to allow its importation into the United States--and Virginia Woolf was moved to decry James Joyce's "cloacal obsession." None of these adjectives, however, do the slightest justice to the novel. To this day it remains the modernist masterpiece, in which the author takes both Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes.
Ulysses
Amazon Price: $2.54 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
Don't give up on Ulysses! Get the Burgess book as a guide, or the Gilbert guide. But don't give up. Riches, great riches, await you!
CATCH-22 by Joseph Heller
Yossarian says, "You're talking about winning the war, and I am talking about winning the war and keeping alive."
"Exactly," Clevinger snapped smugly. "And which do you think is more important?"
"To whom?" Yossarian shot back. "It doesn't make a damn bit of difference who wins the war to someone who's dead."
"I can't think of another attitude that could be depended upon to give greater comfort to the enemy."
"The enemy," retorted Yossarian with weighted precision, "is anybody who's going to get you killed, no matter which side he's on."
Mirabile dictu, the book holds up post-Reagan, post-Gulf War. It's a good thing, too. As long as there's a military, that engine of lethal authority, Catch-22 will shine as a handbook for smart-alecky pacifists. It's an utterly serious and sad, but damn funny book
THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby
Amazon Price: $5.75 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
I'm troubled that many young people in these reviews don't seem to appreciate this novel. Even when "forced" to read it in high school, I loved it. I've read it for probably the tenth time recently and I can say that every single time it's better than I remembered it.
A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN by James Joyce
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Amazon Price: $4.84 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
Perhaps Joyce's most personal work, A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man depicts the intellectual awakening of one of literature's most memorable young heroes, Stephen Dedalus. Through a series of brilliant epiphanies that parallel the development of his own aesthetic consciousness, Joyce evokes Stephen's youth, from his impressionable years as the youngest student at the Clongowed Wood school to the deep religious conflict he experiences at a day school in Dublin, and finally to his college studies where he challenges the conventions of his upbringing and his understanding of faith and intellectual freedom. James Joyce's highly autobiographical novel was first published in the United States in 1916 to immediate acclaim.
LOLITA by Vladimir Nabokov
The narrator, Humbert Humbert, is a fascinating construction. As readers, we find ourselves simultaneously repelled by his actions and sympathetic to his yearning. We are utterly charmed by his wit, intelligence and verbal acrobatics, sometimes to the point where we lost sight of what he's doing to his object of desire, Lolita.
Lolita (Everyman's Library Classics)
