I've shopped at local stores for pillows but I find the ideas are a bit stale. It's as if they stock only the designs that will appeal to the largest number of people.

I have a thing for black and white whether it's modern throw pillows, clothing, or home decor. I have often set out with the best of intentions of purchasing something for my home in vibrant colors to coordinate with what I already have and come home with something in black and white because my eye is simply drawn to these classic patterns.

I do the same thing with clothes. When they put a White House Black Market store in my area I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. New modern throw pillow designers often open their store fronts on Amazon. The challenge is weeding through ALL of the pillows to find the most current and stylish modern throw pillows. It can be a bit of a challenge picking your modern throw pillows from an online website. Will the color be right? Will the pattern match what I already have in the room? Follow these tips for making your selection with confidence:

• If you're trying to match some existing fabric in the room and have a laptop, take the laptop into the room with you where the pillows will be used, enlarge any pictures of the ones you like, and hold your laptop up near your furniture just as you would with the real pillow itself.


• If you don't have a laptop, take a picture of the room where the pillows will be located and keep it in front of you as you shop online.


• Check out the online store's return policy. Online shopping sites usually have generous return policies. They know that they need to make things easier on shoppers in order to compete with brick and mortar establishments and they want you to have a great shopping experience.

How many pillows should you use on your sofa or love seat? The answer depends entirely on you. There is no right or wrong answer - there is only your own preference and design instinct.

When we moved into our last house, we bought two sofa and love seat sets. One was for our living room and came with four of the same throw pillow - two for the sofa and two for the love seat. The other furniture set was for our formal living room and the sofa alone came with 7 pillows in 2 different sizes and three four different patterns.

The number of throw pillows you should buy depends on:

* the size of your sofa or couch

* the look you're trying to achieve

* how often you use that piece of furniture

If these pillows are for your every day sofa, you don't have a lot of room for extra pillows and you don't want to have to move them around each time you sit down, then go for just one or two pillows for each corner. If, instead, you're dressing the sofa up for design appeal, considering lining a whole row of pillows in mix and match patterns to cover the entire sofa or stack them in two or three layers using large pillows in the back and smaller throw pillows up front. Using modern patterns will update a room even if you haven't changed out the furniture in years - as long as everything matches aesthetically.

Note: When making your own modern throw pillows, any fabric is suitable but some are more easy to work with than others. For simplicity, a washable fabric will be easier to take care of although more delicate fabrics can be dry-cleaned. If your fabric is too thin, be prepared to add a lining fabric to the back of your modern pillow fabric. Not only will this help define any print on your pillow fabric, but it will add to the strength and longevity of your pillow.

All fabrics used in pillow projects should be washed beforehand to ensure a proper fit of the fabric to the form rather than having your pillow covers shrink after the first wash.

It's finally Spring! The weather here is beautiful and there's a gentle breeze rolling through nearly every day. It brings with it the scent of fresh cut grass and blossoming flowers.

This is a great tip for updating modern throw pillows you already have or for making new modern throw pillows on the cheap. All you need is a pair of great standard size pillowcases. If you already have a couple of throw pillows but don't like the style any more, tuck them into pillowcases and fold the pillow case ends in around the pillow like you would fold a sandwich bag. Pillowcases are generally 21" wide. If this is too wide for your pillows, buy pillow inserts online that are 18" or 20" squares.

This tip also works for temporary changes to your look for either a change in seasons or for special holidays. It's much easier to store some extra pillowcases than it is to store a bunch of extra throw pillows!

I happen to have a small sofa my husband and I share to watch TV. Each side reclines to the point of nearly laying flat out as if you were watching TV in bed. I have my side and he has his. Under no circumstances would we switch. I have to be on the left side. That way, I can prop my throw pillow in the sofa corner under my left arm. That's the only way I'm completely comfortable. It can't be under my right arm as that needs to be free for a magazine, a book, the remote or popcorn. And if the pillow isn't under my left arm, I feel is if I'm floating - untethered to the sofa. Yes, I know. It's strange. But I can't be the only one, right? I need my throw pillow!!

We use throw pillows for all kinds of things. To make ourselves comfortable on our furniture, to add a finished look to our room, to tie together the colors in our artwork and furniture....sometimes even for a fun, family pillow fight. In either case, throw pillows have been around for a very, long time. Modern throw pillows come in all shapes and sizes and make a statement all their own. They can be plush and soft or stiff and respectable. They can be bright and shiny and artistic enough to be framed or whimsical and entertaining focal pieces. I am sure, whether you are just starting out in your first dorm or apartment and lacking cash or if you have a beautiful home filled with contemporary art, you will find a modern throw pillow or a pillow idea that will work for you.

Is a throw pillow a modern throw pillow simply because it's being manufactured today? No. There are many throw pillow styles including Modern, Country and Victorian among others. Modern pillows are usually determined to be so based on their fabrics and patterns. Current designs in geometric prints, bright vibrant colors, bold circles are all modern pillow designs as are today's prints in metalics and modern Indian print fabrics. Modern pillow colors include traditional black and white prints done in new patterns, combinations of pink with brown or blue. Bright, off-kilter stripes and bold flowers in bright colors are also typical of modern throw pillows.

Modern throw pillows come in all kinds of fabrics. Some have removable covers for easy cleaning. Some do not and may need to be sent to the dry cleaner on occasion. Check all labels.

To keep fresh in between washings, use a spray fabric deodorizer when necessary. Nothing makes fabric goods smell good like a day in the sun. Get a large mesh laundry bag, put your pillows inside, and hang the bag someplace safe outside for a few hours.

To store, stack pillows lightly in a laundry basket or on a closet shelf. If you have more pillows than needed at any one time, store them in plastic bins under beds where they're not likely to be squashed (or forgotten).
