Modern Furniture Icons

If you don't recognize at least one of these, you need to brush up!

Modern furniture is a topic I hold near and dear to my heart. I'm not in the furniture biz, or even a professional designer, but I absolutely love well designed furniture.

My favorite era is the mid 20th century, classic furniture icons designed by legends of the Bauhaus and International styles. These include Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Charles & Ray Eames and Eileen Gray to name but a few. Of course, there are many more legendary furniture designers, but these will more than likely be recognized by many of you and that means that they are the perfect designers to showcase.

Charles & Ray Eames

A little background on the pair and a few featured pieces.

Eames lounge chair and ottoman

As most of you probably already know, Charles Eames, Jr (1907-1978) and his wife, Bernice Alexandra "Ray" Eames (1912-1988), were well known and respected American designers. They worked in the fields of modern architecture, furniture, industrial and graphic design. Many of their mid-century modern furniture is still considered very trendy, even cutting edge.

With so many successful designs under their belts, it's almost impossible to pick which would best represent their style, methods, collection of work. Not only were their designs cutting edge, their techniques were as well.

The Eames we so progressive that they actually pioneered many technologies and techniques required to produce their furniture. Methods that they developed or had significant involvement in regarding advancement of said techniques include Bent Plywood, Fiberglass and Plastic Resin as well as steel mesh furniture. Much of their furniture was designed for the prestigious furniture manufacturer Herman Miller.

At about 800 pages, this book is "The Book" on the subject of Charles and Ray Eames furniture.

The authors, Marilyn Neuhart and her husband John have both worked with the Eames' from the 1950's until 1978. Having the opportunity to work with and to be so close to the Eames' and members of their office, the authors have certainly heard their fair share of stories and seen a great deal of what was involved in designing and creating a piece of Eames' furniture. This book tells the story of the Eames from someone who was there, part of it, part of history; it provides a unique perspective and insight that probably no other book can.

This is a two volume set with over 2500 pictures and a lot of details on each of the works that came out of the Eames' workshop. If you are looking for a comprehensive book that provides great details and images, look no further. This is your book.

Eileen Gray

A brief bio and a few pieces of furniture you may have seen before

Kathleen Eileen Moray Gray (August 9, 1878 - October 31, 1976) was an Irish furniture designer and architect. Some of her more famous works include the E1027 table, The Bibendum Chair, and Daybed.

Gray was not only known for furniture design, but also architecture, and the house E-1027 is one I find particularly interesting (largely due to the fantastic seaside setting and furniture designed for it).

Eileen Gray's Bibendum Chair is one of the 20th century's most recognizable furniture designs. Constructed of tubular steel and luxurious full grain leather, the chair is inviting a comfortable, perfect for lounging and showcasing as a display piece. A very nice item to have in your living room or lounge.
