Design Within Reach is the source for fully licensed classics. Our business started when our founder tried to furnish his apartment with the mid-century classics he'd come to appreciate while living in London. What he discovered was that acquiring the clean, simple work of designers like Saarinen, Eames and Bertoia was neither clean nor simple.

There had to be a better way, so in 1999 we bought 20 containers of product, mailed out a catalog and waited for the phone to ring. (It didn't for 24 hours, until we realized the nighttime answering machine had been accidentally left on.) The rest, as they say, is history. By giving customers access to these items, and by having them in stock and ready to ship, we made design within reach.

Modern Tots

ModernTots was created in 2005 to bring a new standard of style into kids' rooms. We believe the simplicity and elegance of modern design that we buy for ourselves is perfectly suited to the space in which children eat, sleep, wash, and play. Although this space is commonly shared with the rest of the family, the aesthetic and functional lessons of modernism often seem to be lost in furnishings for children. Why shouldn't their environment be as functional and look as good as the rest of the house?
Our mission is to seek out the sources of exceptional furnishings and to find ways to bring them to you. We network with artists and designers whose work embodies the highest standards of quality, style, and originality. Their output represents a considerable range in style and price. Some of the products we have chosen push the envelope of modern design, many are contemporary interpretations of pieces every home with a child must have. But all of the products offered at ModernTots are practical, well-crafted, and genuinely beautiful.

For our boutique, we search high and low for unique and stylish items that you can't find in a big chain store. Many of our selections are handmade or one-of-a-kind vintage finds. Piccolini

piccolini's founder and creative director, jessica troiano, a commercial litigator in a downtown Philadelphia firm, found herself constantly on the hunt for new and cool baby gifts for the growing number of her friends having children. Finally, in September 2005, frustrated with no creative outlet at her "day job" and even more frustrated with the lack of hip and modern baby products available, ms. troiano (who welcomed her first child, daughter lola on november 2, 2006) decided to take the plunge and open her own baby lifestyle boutique. ms. troiano now owns and runs piccolini while at the same time maintaining her litigation career. originally, troiano started piccolini with one central goal: that parents not into "cutesy" would no longer have to sacrifice their personal design aesthetic just because they happen to have kids!

troiano's focus has changed. new parents have so much to learn and that learning curve is pretty steep, so piccolini has searched high and low for the best baby products out there (eco-friendly, cool and innovative) to help parents get a leg up on the whole new baby thing.

piccolini is committed to corporate responsibility and will donate 10% of its yearly profits to alex's lemonade stand, benefiting pediatric cancer research.

Sparkability

We were some very frustrated parents when we started this company in 2003. The infant and children's products industry is filled with not-so-inspiring items that we just didn't want around our kids. Where were all of the "Great Products" that should be out there? Instead of inspiring designs, we found cheap, plastic, throw-away products. Months of searching did turn up a handful of fabulous things, but nobody was offering them as a cohesive collection. There is probably a good reason for this - but since we couldn't find it, we started Sparkability.

We're still frustrated, and we're still parents, but this business has helped us and others surround our children with products that demonstrate our values and our love. We hope that more and more parents will come to the realization that we teach our kids our values through the products that we do (and don't) purchase for them. So even if you don't buy it from us - buy your child something really, really wonderful.
