Designing Your Modern Nursery
First Steps to Style
Many parents today are shying away from nursery themes and are looking for something more contemporary when designing a room for their newborn or toddler. But where to start? When I designed my son's nursery I knew that I wanted to create an atmosphere that was relaxing for me. I figured that I would be the one nursing in there in the middle of the night and that the baby would not care about how his nursery was designed as long as it was warm and dark and quiet.
Your local fabric store is a great place to start and when you find a design or pattern that you like you have colors and possible shapes to start giving your nursery a specific look and feel. Your fabric store should know of a local seamstress who can sew for you if you aren't wanting or willing to. I sourced our fabric from a great modern online fabric shop called Contemporary Cloth (www.contemporarycloth.com) . The fabric for the curtains has circles in blues and browns and I found a "sister" fabric that was small polka dots which I used for the crib bumpers and a small pillow I had made for the rocking chair. Another website that will create these pieces for you is JavisDavis.com. They have a great selection of coordinating fabrics and can sew almost anything for you from window treatments to pillows and bedding.
Wall Décor can take many shapes and forms. Popular now are wooden letters spelling your tots name that you can hang over a crib or changing table. Personalized wall art like that from Hip Kid Art (www.hipkidart.com) works in any nursery, playroom or kid's bedroom. Think a bit out of the box%u2026.for a baby girl's room you could hang vintage baby dresses from old colorful hangers at different levels on one wall or use a few small shelves to showcase cute-as-a-button baby shoes. For a boy's room those same small shelves might hold toy boats or vintage toy cars. We had a small shelf that had not only our child's silver baby cup but and my husband's and my silver baby cups and rattles.
While furniture comes in all styles and price ranges safety should be your main concern. Make sure that the crib is study with a drop rail that stays firmly in place. All cribs must pass safety standards though these standards do change. It is recommended that you purchase a new crib. Modern cribs can be purchased everywhere these days from Walmart to chic little online boutiques. You'll need either a dresser where you can use the top as a changing table or a proper changing table and some sort of chair for nursing or feeding your baby. Also crucial is lighting%u2026a dimmer switch is inexpensive to install and will provide that soothing late-night light so you can see your way around the nursery without disturbing a sleepy baby.
While it is best to have hardwood floors in your nursery with a small area rug many people already have wall-to-wall carpeting installed. It is a good idea to give the carpet a good steam cleaning regularly to kill any dust mites that may be lurking. You also want to be aware that it is never a good idea to put brand new carpeting in a nursery as there are many toxic gasses that are released from both new synthetic carpeting as well as the padding that is laid under it. That said, it is also important to realize that your brand new baby furniture will also release these gases.
Much of the more inexpensive "wood" furniture (usually made from particleboard) is bad for the health of both mother and child. These products often contain toxic substances that can off-gas into your home-including formaldehyde, a suspected carcinogen used in adhesives, paints, and varnishes. Furniture with foam-filled cushions can also be dangerous. Foam is commonly treated with fire-retardant chemicals called polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs. Exposure to PBDEs, which are chemical cousins to the banned PCBs, is particularly harmful to fetuses and can cause brain and reproductive system disorders. Plan ahead and purchase furniture at least 3 months in advance to let some of the gasses escape. Also a great addition to your nursery is a HEPA air filter. It will capture and dispel these gasses as well as provide some "white noise" in the nursery that can help to lull your baby to sleep.
Modern design is not just for grown-ups. Follow your own sense of style when creating a nest for your newborn and it will make all of those late nights much more palatable for Mamma.

- Design with Reach
- Design Within Reach is the source for fully licensed classics. Our business started when our founder tried to furnish his apartment with the mid-century classics he'd come to appreciate while living in London. What he discovered was that acquiring the clean, simple work of designers like Saarinen, Eames and Bertoia was neither clean nor simple.
There had to be a better way, so in 1999 we bought 20 containers of product, mailed out a catalog and waited for the phone to ring. (It didn't for 24 hours, until we realized the nighttime answering machine had been accidentally left on.) The rest, as they say, is history. By giving customers access to these items, and by having them in stock and ready to ship, we made design within reach. - Cocoon Couture

In other words, we've done the homework for you. Our collection includes all your must-have baby items, pre-sorted to include only the most stylish, healthy and innovative products available -- from fun, bright bedding and furniture to gear, toys, baby care, cleaning products, and more. - Modern Tots
- ModernTots was created in 2005 to bring a new standard of style into kids' rooms. We believe the simplicity and elegance of modern design that we buy for ourselves is perfectly suited to the space in which children eat, sleep, wash, and play. Although this space is commonly shared with the rest of the family, the aesthetic and functional lessons of modernism often seem to be lost in furnishings for children. Why shouldn't their environment be as functional and look as good as the rest of the house?
Our mission is to seek out the sources of exceptional furnishings and to find ways to bring them to you. We network with artists and designers whose work embodies the highest standards of quality, style, and originality. Their output represents a considerable range in style and price. Some of the products we have chosen push the envelope of modern design, many are contemporary interpretations of pieces every home with a child must have. But all of the products offered at ModernTots are practical, well-crafted, and genuinely beautiful.
We hope you enjoy the collection offered at ModernTots. And if you know of products we should carry, people we should meet, trade shows we should attend, or if you just want to say hello, please reach out to us. - Baby Oliver

- piccolini's founder and creative director, jessica troiano, a commercial litigator in a downtown Philadelphia firm, found herself constantly on the hunt for new and cool baby gifts for the growing number of her friends having children. Finally, in September 2005, frustrated with no creative outlet at her "day job" and even more frustrated with the lack of hip and modern baby products available, ms. troiano (who welcomed her first child, daughter lola on november 2, 2006) decided to take the plunge and open her own baby lifestyle boutique. ms. troiano now owns and runs piccolini while at the same time maintaining her litigation career. originally, troiano started piccolini with one central goal: that parents not into "cutesy" would no longer have to sacrifice their personal design aesthetic just because they happen to have kids!
troiano's focus has changed. new parents have so much to learn and that learning curve is pretty steep, so piccolini has searched high and low for the best baby products out there (eco-friendly, cool and innovative) to help parents get a leg up on the whole new baby thing.
piccolini is committed to corporate responsibility and will donate 10% of its yearly profits to alex's lemonade stand, benefiting pediatric cancer research. - Sparkability
- We were some very frustrated parents when we started this company in 2003. The infant and children's products industry is filled with not-so-inspiring items that we just didn't want around our kids. Where were all of the "Great Products" that should be out there? Instead of inspiring designs, we found cheap, plastic, throw-away products. Months of searching did turn up a handful of fabulous things, but nobody was offering them as a cohesive collection. There is probably a good reason for this - but since we couldn't find it, we started Sparkability.
We're still frustrated, and we're still parents, but this business has helped us and others surround our children with products that demonstrate our values and our love. We hope that more and more parents will come to the realization that we teach our kids our values through the products that we do (and don't) purchase for them. So even if you don't buy it from us - buy your child something really, really wonderful.
