Its Time to Rethink Your Umbrella

Everyone owns an umbrella. Very few own a truthfully presentable one.

There is no better place to start than Umbrellas

You have an umbrella collecting dust under your bed or stashed in the back of your closet. It's plain, cheap and probably affected with ugly colors, patterns or worse, your Alma mater's mascot. Much like the time you gave up your favorite t-shirt that had one too many adolescent memories or those jeans that had seen their best days back when R Kelly was still legit, you need to change your rain umbrella.

Upgrade to the fashion umbrella. Realize touting a flimsy nylon cover is no more appropriate or fashionable than mom jeans or dot com khakis with socks and sandals.

The possibilities for contemporary stylized umbrellas are as endless as your wardrobe choices. This means all the same palettes, color combinations, patterns and graphics which you wear on your coats, shirts and other accessories are equally viable on your umbrella.

Think of it as an adult accessory, not a strictly functional rain shield. You take your job and wardrobe seriously - do the same for your umbrella.

I would begin by making a checklist of who you are as a person. Write down your personality traits and anything else that sets you apart from others. From here try to match up those factors with attributes of an umbrella. Crazy personalities should match up with vibrant colors and patterns. This means more conservative folks need to stick to muted umbrellas. Then again, life is all about contradictions, so feel free to try out some wild designs no matter what type of person you are.

As for prices, I try to stick to more affordable models. Don't spend more than $50 for any type of umbrella unless it comes with a lifetime warranty and cleans your dishes. Don't get too out of hand, because in reality, these are just pieces of metal and water resistant cover! I have found my favorites were all under $30, something we can all afford, and a lot of them were even under $15. If you want your rain piece to live for a long time, you have to invest energy to keep it in top shape and clean it periodically. Wash it after heavy usage and don't let it stay soiled rotting away in your closet. Warm damp cloths work wonders on any type of cover material, but make sure to be gentle.

A Favorite Model - Lace Pattern Umbrella

An Unusual Pattern

Varying shades of gray work wonders to create this beautiful and windproof umbrella. I would use this umbrella on a chilly fall day with some layers of other gray clothing like a tweed overcoat. This umbrella is perfect for the individual who needs something fancy but nothing that will peg them as a trendy slave for fashion or attention. You will stay perfectly muted with this one.

Modern Umbrella Spotlight - Candy Stripe Umbrella

You Can't Eat This One

A tad more aggressive pattern for this umbrella. It retains a tasteful aesthetic without being too loud and with this, who needs a canopy for those sunny days when you can walk around with this umbrella. The bright orange is great to compliment sunny days and the playful palette is youthful, making even the oldest user a tad younger in everyone's eyes. Have some fun this spring or summer and whip out this model when the clouds come in.

A Unique One Over Here - Rose Drawing Umbrella

Hand Drawn Roses

Instead of computer designed motifs, here is an umbrella relying on youthful drawings of roses. Something you do not see every day, a unique umbrella with cartoon prints on it. This is a real favorite of mine, it is both childish and artful at the same time, yet very playful. The cover is transparent so you can see through it, giving it that classic clear rain umbrella look and the cartoon roses pump up the character.

Tiny Versions Are Nice As Well - Slim Solid Umbrella

Classic Solid Updated for Today

This bears some similarities with run of the mill umbrellas, but this model is a new take on the standard solid with a significantly slimmer physique, handle and cover. A very compact umbrella for the smaller individual or person who needs an umbrella that can be stored very easily. The beige color fits with every other color in your wardrobe and flatters all complexions. You won't get washed out by the rain or this color when you use this rain umbrella.

Give This as a Present - Dotted Ring Umbrella

Dots Instead of Lines

For Autumn and Winter colors, Black is always a safe bet. Add some life to your accessories with this black piece that has multiple rings made up of different sized dots. Make this a golf umbrella and match it to your black club bag or just use it when it drizzles outside. I can guarantee no one will own a rain umbrella like this model and you will surely get a lot of high fives and positive attention by using this outside.

A Design From Decades Ago - Flower Umbrella

Flowers Are Not Just For Kids

You may hate the fact your parents were hippies, but it doesn't mean you cant enjoy flower motifs. Here is a flower inspired design with soft colors meant for spring, summer and breezy autumn evenings. The brown shade is perfect for the autumn and little specks of blue on the flowers really brings in the whole earth tone palette. Think brown and blue, earth and sky and you will see why this rain umbrella works perfectly.

Modern Umbrella Spotlight - Animal Umbrella

Animals Have a Place in Umbrellas Too

The new breed of umbrellas utilize different motifs such as this animal inspired piece. A great umbrella with a youthful vibe from the animals between the blocks of color. The animals add a lot of cuteness to the umbrella, perfect for the lady wanting a pretty accessory on rainy days.

Sound off!

Why not have it both ways? Hats, gloves, and even socks are all great accessories which have function and also have people mulling over their sartorial possibilities. Umbrellas are the same way, we just don't know it yet. This is true especially for the folk who live in the wetter climates like Seattle. Investing in a better and modern rain guard is a wise decision for everyone, snobby fashionistas and the average Joe. After all, who doesn't like to have their cake and eat it too?
