Modules make Squidoo...Squidoo!

What makes Squidoo different than other help-you-build-it websites?

One feature is modules.

Modules are sections of a lens that you add depending on what kind of content you want to add. Want to create a list of links? Add a link module. Want to write a story? Add the write module. Want to sell something from Amazon? Add the Amazon module. And so on.

Here you can learn more information about adding modules and using them. You can also get personal help from from ME, gia, aka Ener-G, a Citizen Squid and your Modules Mentor.

To find your answer, look through the links below. If you still can't find the answer, leave a message at the guestbook below. (Be sure to log in so I can answer your question directly!)

The Basics

The Introduction Module

iStock_000003992880XSmall.jpgThe Introduction Module is the first thing visitors see so it is important to spend some time on it. It has two optional features:

The Table of Contents is self explanatory.

The Discovery Tool allows exploration of similar lenses.

How to Add Modules

Megan from HQ explains all about the new module dashboard. It's smokin' hot!

The Text / Write module for Anything!

The Text/Write module is one of the most flexible modules. Margaret_Schaut created this helpful lens showing you how to get the most out of the text write module.

She shows you how to add more than one picture, include a block quote, and much more!

Money Making Modules

Amazon Modules

iStock_000002465555XSmall.jpgThe most successful money making module is the Amazon module. There are four different types of Amazon modules:

Original Amazon Module: You can add a description, links and even pictures in the description field using simple html.

Amazon Spotlight: Lets you highlight, and recommend, a single product. Also allows html in the description.

Amazon Plexo: Lets your visitors add and vote on products. The Plexo can also be used on another one of your lenses.

Amazon Recommends: Enter the ASIN number of a book (or other product) and this module creates a Plexo module and automatically includes recommendations from Amazon.

Amazon MP3: Pick out your favorite music and feature it in this great widget.

Don't forget, Amazon has a lot of products other than books such as DVDs, cameras, computers, etc

Will Smith plays Robert Neville, a military scientist searching for a cure for a virus that turns people into crazy, flesh-eating zombies! He finds himself alone in Manhattan...

The Cafepress Module

The Cafepress Module is also very popular. This lens by ThomasC shows you how to use the CafePress module AND how to set up your own Cafepress store.

Interact with Your Visitors

Guestbook Module

Another name for comments

The guestbook module lets visitors leave you some praise and encouragement. It's also a way for Squid Angels to tell you when they've visited. In return you can get to know your visitors and keep the conversations going.

Prediction and Duel Modules

A slightly different version of a Guestbook

The Prediction and Duel Modules invite your visitors to answer a question or two that you've dangled in front of them. Who's going to win? What's the outcome going to be? They work well in the middle of a lens.

Plexo Modules

What Are Your Favorite Modules?

Plexo Modules allow your readers to vote on and add their "favorites." You can have visitors vote on their favorite Youtube videos, their favorite Flickr photos, their favorite books, etc. There is a different Plexo module for each one of these.

Here you can vote on your favorite module. You can also add your own.

We're still fairly new to squidoo but have made 19 lenses. We are having trouble adding modules to my completed lenses. The add button is dark, not orange. Am I doing something wrong? By the way, this is a valuable lens. We've learned much from looking for info related to our issue. We'll be back to utilize this info as soon as we can update our lenses. Thx much.

in reply to Ener-G Thanks Ener-G. I actually went to my bio page today before writing to you and selected contact/ yes but it hasn't taken it for some reason. My personal email is scroggs@comcast.net, (please don't publish my email) I am Chris Scroggins. I can't modify the content of the lens I referred to because it doesn't belong to me!

Hello,
Last year, before I was building any of my own lenses, I hired a Squidoo lensmaster to build a lens for me. I am a Cafepress shopkeeper, and as many of you probably know, recently many CP shopkeepers have opted out of the CP marketplace. What does this have to do with squidoo? Well, since I have opted out of the marketplace, now none of the links work in this particular lens. The lens doesn't belong to me, but it is a lens built to promote my products. It looks really bad to have all those dead links in the CP modules. I have contacted the lensmaster and I haven't gotten a response. Do you have any advice? Thanks so much for your help. in reply to smileygirl22 You didn't leave your email address or have your contact button activated so must leave a reply here. Yes, there's a way to change the modules while you are building your lens. It's a little different, in the different lens builders, but one has you select the modules you want and another let's you choose whether you are focusing on making money, get the word out or just do your own thing. Choose the latter and the lens will come up "blank." When you become a Giant Squid (hint, hint) you can make templates with your own choice of modules and use those over and over.

The Table of Contents Module

This module lets you list the other modules on your lens. If a lens is long, such as this one, I like to put a Table of Contents at the top and at the bottom of the lens.

If you have any questions be sure and ask them above in the Guestbook Module
