Getting My Mojo Back

How I Misplaced the Magic

This has been one hell of a year!

First, my marriage came to an end. But not in a rip-the-bandaid-off kind of way. More like slowly dying from an incurable disease and realizing that things are worse than you thought.

Then, while I was still like Stella trying to get her groove back, I received some upsetting criticism about my work (I'm a personal style blogger, a Dressing Your Truth affiliate and the author of The Capsule Wardrobe Book: Signature Style Essentials for Plus-Size Fashionistas) and it came from a source I thought would applaud me.

Next up was car trouble and because I couldn't afford to fix it right away, a month or more of needing rides, renting a car for short periods of time and spending lots of time at home wishing I could get to the store, or other places.

Finally, my relationship with my mother took a turn for the worse. She is passive-aggressive and one of the things about people like that is that you never know when it's coming. Passive-aggressive behavior hits you from out of the blue, usually completely unexpectedly, and often after a lengthy period of peace.

One of the results of all this stress is that I am sabotaging my business. Not tweeting, not posting on my Facebook page, not engaging in the supportive groups with other bloggers who have been so helpful in the past. And affiliate sales have begun to dry up. It's almost like I am punishing myself for all these things that have happened!

So, rather than burying my head under the pillow once and for all, I have decided to figure out how to get my mojo back. And thus, the reason for this lens.

Intuitive Encouragement

Isis: "A growing awareness of the magic within yourself. A yearning to grow beyond perceived limitations. You are able to transform your life through the strength of your originality and power ~ all you need to do is own it. Renewed creativity and vigor." --The Goddess Tarot, by Kris Waldherr

I have been doing tarot card readings (mostly for myself and family) for a few years now and I often draw the Magician card. I don't think I have ever liked it, though, as much as I do in goddess guise.

Butterfly: "Every one of us emerges from the chrysalis of darkness and gestation, in which we enter as one self and come out as another. ... Whatever part of the cycle you're in--be it the larva phase, the cocoon stage, or the emergent phase, where you spread your wings and float into your new life--know that you're safe and that this is part of a natural movement." --Power Animals: How to Connect with Your Animal Spirit Guide, Steven D. Farmer, Ph.D

Seeking guidance from the animal spirit realm can happen in several ways. You can look for encounters with certain animals that seems unusual. Not the way it would normally happen, like, say, a dragonfly that heads toward you, flies around your head and then, lands at your feet, when such a thing never happens. Or you can use animal spirit oracle cards.

You also can combine those by going to look up the animal once you have had an unusual sighting or encounter.

Right around the time I was musing about this situation in my life and the need for guidance, a butterfly landed on my window while I was in a room I am rarely in during the day and it stayed there for quite some time. When it finally did move, it flew from one windowpane to another several times before flying away for good.

And I appreciate the encouragement, from both places, let me tell you!

How I Plan to Get My Mojo Back

(1) Get LOTS of sleep!: I never really get enough ad you'd think that during stressful times, you'd need more, right? So I, incurable night owl, am going to try my best to go to bed earlier several nights in a row so I can get a bit of extra sleep somewhere in there.

(2) Watch movies that encourage me:

The Holiday
Pride and Prejudice

(3) Listen to music that encourages me: so far, what has occurred to me, is the Hallelujah video where Celine Dion surprises the Canadian Tenors on the Oprah Winfrey show and Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" performance on "Britain's Got Talent" (makes me cry every single time).

(4) Read books that encourages me: I'm thinking chick lit but we'll see what else I find on Amazon...

The Summerhouse by Jude Devereaux
Return to Summerhouse by Jude Devereaux

(5) Take long walks and come back to afternoon tea with pineapple pound cake cookies: this is my favorite season (autumn) and I need more exercise. But wouldn't it be cool if I could have "milk and cookies" when I come back inside form my walk?

(6) Take a week off from work: when you work from home, you almost never take time off because the things that still need to be done sort of scream at you from the back of your mind.
