The Great Moleskine Fairy Tale
By now you may or may not have noticed the hype over a certain brand of pocket notebook/journal called the moleskine[apparently its pronounced mol-e-skin-a].The company that sells these products has a marketing campaign based on gross exagerration of the prestige their products. They make the claim that the likes of Van Gogh and Chatwin used their notebooks. In actuality, while they used moleskin notebooks, they weren't produced by the current manufacturer.
The molskine is a high quality product with the only complaint I have ever seen being the thiness of the paper. There are other cheaper products out there that are just as good however. It is perhaps tempting to join the cult of notebook elitism and there are countless stauch defenders of the moleskine that profess it has an undescrible"oomph" factor. Still, i decided it was worthwhile to make a lens outlining some worthy alternatives.
The Anything Book
The blurb for this journal on the amazon website reads"Handsome and elegant, this classic blank book, is perfect for the busy life of moms and dads, students and executives. A rich leather look, gold-stamped borders and a handy, compact design makes this the perfect appointment book, minutes log, idea book, travel diary and so much more. Other colors are available in this Anything Book Series. 160 ruled pages."
The book comes in many different colors and clocks in at a very reasonable $5.99 at amazon.com especially when you consider that the cheapest you can currently find a moleskine for on the web is $.9.00 Look further down if your interested in buying one.
The Ciak
The Ciak or what i like to call the underdog, is I suppose no less elitist than the moleskin and has its own devoted following, still you can't help feeling that they are slightly less pretentious. Here's the blurb from amazon.co.uk If you are in the US you can purchase them at Borders
"This is Ciak, the handy and versatile journal, soft and colourful. Much more than just a notebook: an inseparable, trusted and discrete friend, ready to follow you through all your adventures, whether real or imagined.
Different from the others, and more like you.
This is Ciak, the handy and versatile notebook, soft and coloured, which comes into everybody's lives and pockets. It is easily recognised by the simplicity of its closure, guardian of the words on its pages.
A black elastic band which opens and closes to release or protect your most hidden thoughts, and which embraces everything important that has been written. Essential and without fringes, Ciak is ready to be customised, filled and characterised by intimate and personal words, sketches and emotions.
Contemporary and up to date, free from a cumbersome past which recalls myths and historical personalities. Fitting right into the daily life of the young and not so young, travellers and businessmen, dreamers, poets and artists, it quietly welcomes all the important thoughts and emotions, becoming every day more and more like you.
Wasting no words, Ciak presents itself with its distinguishing simplicity and clarity. It shows its innovative and surprising features, through a fresh and coloured, appealing and playful image.
The story of Ciak continues today in the pockets of thousands of people who have chosen a companion to live and travel with. A notebook with a thousand faces and uses to suit the personality and needs of each person who owns it. "

- There are other good alternatives out there including the Leuchtturm, Cartesio, and Rhodia Web Notebook. The paper in these is thicker and more pen resistant than the Moleskine and will hold up well to most fountain pens. I have reviewed most all of these on my blog at http://www.journalingarts.wordpress.com. Let me know what you think.
