I use different colors of ink for different types of engagements. Red is always a doctor appointment. It stands out well so we don't miss any appointments. I use black for general things like dates with hubby or going to my moms. You could use blue for sports events or purple for school events.

I use calendar stickers on my mom calendars and planners. Not only to they add color and interest, they also help make the appointment stand out. They are easy to read and most have a little picture that helps identify it. It makes it easy to tell what I need to do on a certain day.
