Picturing Angels
Few of us are privilged to see an Angel.
Years ago. I had to do a school project about the local church and while I was there gathering information my father fought off his boredom by taking some photos. When one came back, there was this brilliant white flash, symmetrical with raised "wings". We lost the photo almost immediately - I cannot recall how that happened but somehow it feels right that we did. Something to see and inspire, but not something to pore over and analyse.
Was it an Angel? It doesn't matter. Believing in Angels is what is important: not seeing one.

Angels in Art

Angels have been a popular subject for artists for centuries such as in the Annunciation by El Greco from 1575. They are usually depicted as essentially human in form but with wings and usually larger than a person. In religion they are usually seen as being the highest beings below God. The Archangels Gabriel and Michael are important messsangers from God in Christian tradition (Raphael and Uriel also but to a much lesser extent). Artists therefore tend to paint angels either as specific figures such as Gabriel in scenes of the Annunciation like this one; alternatively they may be much more generalised figures intended to convey sense of the Heavenly Host. Heaven is hard to illustrate so devices such as angelic presence are important in its depiction.

Moment of Zen - Squidoo Template
A secondary role of this lens is to illustrate the use of the Sqidoo "Moment of Zen" template. As you can see it's essentially a peaceful layout. I use it either when I want that sense of peace; if I am wanting to portray something as serious/studious; or when I have very strong content which might clash with a more strongly-themed template.
