A Complete Information On How A Mom Can Work From Home

This is what a mom need to know about working from home.

Why A Mom Should Give Working FroM Home A Try

If you are a mom (or you are about to become one for the first time), perhaps you've thought of working from home. In fact, it can be done, and more and more employers are actually encouraging their employees to work from home. As the economy takes a dive and more jobs are lost, employers are looking for ways to cut costs so that they can stay in business and still keep their employees in jobs, too. One of the ways they can cut costs is by encouraging employees to work at home at least part-time; this reduces their overhead because they need less space and less equipment upkeep to run their businesses from a central location.

By letting employees work from home at least part-time, employers move a lot of their business operations to employees' homes, which can save them money. In addition, it's very advantageous to employees, because it saves on gas, commute time, and clothing costs, among other things. So this may be one of the ways you can work from home; ask your employer if you can move your full-time job to a home office at least a couple of days a week. It's quite likely that he or she is going to be amenable to at least giving it a try.

If you are a new mom and trying this for the first time

One of the best ways to get a work from home job is to ask your employer if you can work at home part-time once the baby comes. The perfect time to ask for this, of course, is not just when you're about ready to leave on your maternity leave. Instead, broach the subject once you know you are pregnant and that this is an option you'd like to consider.

Starting your own business

If you want to start a business from home instead of telecommuting for an employer, this can be a great idea for moms who want to have more time to spend with their children. Because you're not spending time commuting back and forth from work or dashing out the door in the morning, dropping the kids off at daycare or school, and then hightailing it to the office, you easily have at least 10 more hours per week, on average, to spend with your children. Be disciplined enough to make sure you do it; it's very easy to let a new business take over your life and have it become your main focus, especially when you're just starting out so that your business really does need a lot of attention for you to make any kind of profit.

If you don't have something in mind, what can you do from home?

That really depends on your talents, but there are lots of things you can do from home if you're trying to start a business. For example, if you have a knack for medical terminology or legal terminology, and you're a fast typist (upwards of 90 words a minute), medical or legal transcription is one way you can make money from home. It does require some specialized training, but it's very reliable income and there are a lot of people looking for transcriptionists in these areas.

Or, if you've got a knack for web design, programming, or anything computer related, freelancers in these areas can pull in some pretty decent income once they know how to bring in clients. There are lots of forums on the Internet for work at home people in established businesses like graphic arts, web design, computer programming, technical writing, or just about any field you can think of. Many of these jobs will require that you have significant background in these areas already (or that you have a definite knack for them) to succeed, but this is another good way to make a living.

How about some selling?

If you've got a knack for sales, the Internet is a perfect way to establish a burgeoning sales career for yourself. Almost everything in regard to sales that used to be done by telephone or housecalls can now be done with a website, e-mail, and in some cases the phone. If you do decide to go into selling, make sure you choose an established business that's been around for a while and whose products you like. In other words, you can't sell something you don't know is quality and that you don't believe in yourself. You may also need to have some pretty substantial upfront capital to invest in inventory for certain industries. Do your research carefully, and choose carefully, too.

Some caveats

As stated previously, it can be absolutely wonderful to work from home. It can even give you extra freedom as long as you're disciplined both when you're working and when you're not, so that you keep these two areas separate.

However, there are some considerations to discuss. Working at home isn't for everyone, and don't think that working from home gives you a lot of free time (beyond the extra several hours a week as stated previously) to spend with your baby or small children especially. If you have older children in school, this is a perfect setup for a work at home position, whether it comes from a current employer or you decide to start your own business. It's really only going to work if you have at least five to six absolutely uninterrupted hours every day to focus on your job or business.

What does that mean for moms with small children or babies especially? It means that you're going to have to have some type of childcare arrangement for the time you are focused on work. If your husband or partner can take care of the children while you're working, that's great. Just make sure it's understood that you're not to be interrupted and that it's to be treated as though you were away at the office -- which actually, you are; it's just that your office is at home.

Make sure your office or area of business is in a quiet part of the house

If you do have to make phone calls to clients, it is very, very unprofessional to have children screaming in the background or even making a lot of noise when you're trying to conduct business. Therefore, make sure you work in an area where you can close the door and be reasonably free of extraneous noise; this helps you focus on your work, too. It also helps you to be disciplined if you have a separate area to go to when you work, because you'll learn to associate this particular room or space with work and therefore will soon learn to snap into "work mode" when you walk in and close the door.

Finally, it's very, very important that you give enough time to your business so that it can succeed. However, many new business owners find themselves working 80, 90, or more hours a week trying to get things up and running. Of course, this may be absolutely necessary if you are the sole breadwinner and are going to have to make sure you have the money to pay bills. However, if possible, set yourself a limit of no more than 60 hours a week for your business, so that you still have time for your personal life.

Done right, working from home can be very rewarding for both you and your children. Why not see if it's right for you?
