Monarch
Among all butterflies, orange ones fascinate me the most. Ever since I was a small child, I loved spending time in the meadows during summer, which were richly covered in wild flowers, and attracted various butterflies! Today, as a grown-up, this fascination is still alive. While I have many favorites, the Monarch appeals to me the most. The only kind of butterflies I do not like is the one pinned down to some collection; although I of course understand that scientific classification and description would not have been possible without capturing these cuties.
This lens is dedicated to all orange color butterflies, ruled by the majestic Monarch, Danaus plexippus.
Monarchs
The following information is from Wikipedia:
The Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a beautiful and popular North American butterfly. Since the 19th century, it has also been seen in New Zealand and Australia, where they call it "The Wanderer Butterfly." In Europe it is observed in the Canary Islands (except Lanzarote) and Madeira, as well as migrating to the Azores, Portugal and Spain. The wings of the Monarch are orange and black, with a wing-span of 8.5-12.5 cm (3.34 in-4.92 inches). The females have darker veins on their wings, and the males have a spot in the center of each hind wing from which they release the partner-attracting hormones known as the pheromones.Monarchs often fill our heart by their beauty during their long period of migration each year. They migrate in huge clouds, southward, from August until the first frost. In the spring, they migrate northward. Female Monarchs deposit eggs for the next generation during these migrations. The population east of the Rocky Mountains sanctuaries in the area of Angangueo, Michoacán, El Rosario, Mexico, and the western population overwinters in various sites on the Californian coast. They are usually observed in large numbers in Pacific Grove and Santa Cruz, CA. The length of these journeys exceeds the normal lifespan of most Monarchs, which is less than two months for butterflies born in early summer. The last generation of the summer enters into a non-reproductive phase known as diapause and may live up to 7 months. During diapause, butterflies fly to one of many overwintering sites. The generation that overwinters in most cases does not reproduce until it leaves the overwintering site in late February / early March. The overwintering Monarchs have been observed as far north as Texas and Oklahoma during the spring migration.
It is the second, third and fourth generations that return to their northern locations in the United States and Canada in the spring. How the species manages to return to the same overwintering spots over a gap of several generations, is still unknown to scientists. The flight patterns appear to be genetically pre-programmed, and are influenced by the circadian rhythm and the position of the sun in the sky. :o)

Monarch Facts
PROTECTION FROM PREDATORSThe Monarch is a poisonous butterfly. Animals that eat a Monarch get very sick and vomit (but generally do not die). These animals remember that this brightly-colored butterfly made them very sick and will avoid all Monarchs in the future.
The monarch gets its poison (cardenolide glycosides) when it is a caterpillar, from eating the poisonous milkweed plant (genus Asclepias) while in its larval (caterpillar) stage.
MONARCH MIMIC
The poisonous Monarch is mimicked by the non-poisonous North American Viceroy butterfly (Limenitis archippus), which has a similar shape, coloration and patterns. Predators who have learned to avoid the Monarch will also avoid the similar-looking Viceroy.
