What is Mondo Blu Internet Radio?

Listen Now!

Mondo Blu is an attempt to bring music from different genres and countries into one playlist, so you'll find oldies from the 50s to the 80s, new indie artists, plus Blues, Country, Lo-Fi Electronic, World, Folk, Soul and a host of other curiosities, mostly thrown in because they make me laugh (and it's important not to be too serious about music, after all!). Mondo Blu is about breaking with traditional clichés about music, exploring and finding new accessible music for everyone in all genres.

Please take time to vote for songs you like (and especially those you don't), as I will take all comments into account when updating playlists. Or you can request songs by e-mail (requests [at] mondoblu.biz.) And if you like this page, please share the vibe by using one of the buttons down there on the right, Digg, del.icio.us, etc.

Finally, for the latest update news and more, please drop by www.mondoblu.biz (también en castellano)!

New additions to the playlist

New treats for your ears this week!

16.08.08 - Back from a short but well-deserved break (he says modestly) with a bunch of new sounds - 70s B Sides Vol. 3, Electronica from the Tantra Lounge series, Jazz from Canadian guitarist Shan Arsenault, Blues/Rock from Stone Crazy Blues Band, "Songs to Swear By" from newcomers Johhny Philko, a curious mixture of electronics and banjo from the aptly-titled Computer VS Banjo, plus a couple of tracks from the retro-rock Black Angel Band!

02.08.08 - Slightly guitar-oriented additions for the first week of "real" holidays, stretching from Bluegrass - Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, to Hard Rock - OST Heavy Metal, to more melodic Blues-Rock from John Covert!

26.07.08 - Trying to cool off here with some new additions by Jazz drummer Paul Barbarin, new songs by Ben Harper, Classic Surf rock from The Tornadoes and West African grooves from Kakande, as well as two summery songs from Reggae artist Wanted!

19.07.08 - This week is a bit calmer as far as new tracks go, but I'm sure you'll agree, no less than usual in terms of quality. We start with a Dutch Jazz Sampler, including Saskia Laroo, The Auratones and Mark Lotz, then continue with another compilation. the World Music Meeting 2007, which includes performances by Fanfare Ciocarlia, the late great Andy Palacio and the fun Brazilians Clube do Balanço. Finally, we have added more tracks by the eclectic Peter Fand!

12.07.08 - We kick off this batch with a trip back to the 80s with Art of Noise, then more electronic, this time modern, from Swedes Familjen, new rock from Jake Jacobson, Jazz from Brian King, Caribbean Jazz Project, Trevis Rothwell & Friends and Cara Matthew, plus singles from Ella Rouge, The Confusions and Brooke Fraser!!.

The Video Segue 1 - Explanation

It all started with James Blunt - honest!

Well, this song is getting massive airplay at the moment and you have to admit that it's incredibly catchy (the whole album is worth a listen, actually). The feel of it reminded me of a Josh Rouse song, Love Vibration, which curiously is on a CD called 1972.

From Love Vibration to Good Vibrations, although the video isn't as good as this one for the Sloop John B, featuring a bunch of young men just fooling around, exactly the same as in Pink Floyd's See Emily Play.

Some years later, the Floyd went on to produce one of their most famous albums, The Wall, with the classic track (and solo) Comfortably Numb, covered in disco fashion by the inimitable Scissor Sisters on their first album. (At the time, there was a review that said something like you would have to be a very cheerless person, a member of Pink Floyd, or both, not to love this track). Irony of ironies, Scissor Sisters have now been covered in turn by Hayseed Dixie, who have made a name for themselves by playing country versions of classic rock anthems, although this shows them branching out into more commercial territory.

OK, the next link is more tentative (if that were possible) and it's one of the more outrageous covers that I remember, Money (the Beatles one) by The Flying Lizards - where are they now?

Money is what the then ex-Beatle George Harrison made with his enormous hit My Sweet Lord, which came out (I think) in 1973. However, he then had to pay it out again after it was proven that he had in fact "borrowed" a large portion of the song from The Chiffons' He's So Fine!

So that's it, a totally spontaneous and very loose association of videos from the Big Blu One. Hope you enjoy it and more next time!!
