A medieval castle-city in the Peloponnese
Discover the Grandeur of Monemvasia

In the southeastern end of the Peloponnese, in the preface of Lakonia, the castle-city of Monemvasia emerges majestically amidst the waters and transports visitors to an era long past but not forgotten.
To visit the medieval castle city of Monemvasia, in Greece you have to continue some 80 km south from the city of Sparta, arriving at the relatively recent town of Gefira, crossing the stone bridge and going all the way up the road until you reach the entrance door on the walls of the city. Monemvasia actually means "single entrance", in this case entrance only by foot as no cars are allowed in the city.
Monemvasia: a floating fortress with majestic views
Monemvasia the gem of the Peloponnese

Once inside, the visitor is taken aback by the narrow pebbled streets and the little stone houses, that immediately conjure up a charming imagery, culminating at the sight of the astonishing view from the edge of the rocks down to the deep blue of the sea.
The fortress of Monemvasia dates back to the 6th century. It was initially constructed by the Byzantines on a rock that had been separated from the mainland during an earthquake in 375 AC.
From then on, Monemvasia changed hands several times and was ruled by the Franks, Catalans, Ottomans, Byzantines and Venetians in succession. Enriched by this crossing of civilizations, Monemvasia nowadays emerges proud of its history and reviving calmly its glorious past.
