Monet's Garden at Giverny

From a train Monet spotted Giverny through the window. He fell in love and made it his home.

Money spent the second half of his life in Giverny with his second wife and their children. Together they planted the garden, and worked in it year round.

Monet chose all of the plants for himself, and thought about the garden frequently when he was away painting, sending instructions and advice back to his wife Alice.

I visited Giverny in April. The gardens begin blooming in April, but it's my opinion that it is better to go later in the season if you have the chance. However, it was still a beautiful place, and the smell was still wonderful. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be in June or July.

All of the photos on this page are my own, please do not use them without permission. Thank you.

Monet Quote

" We all worked in the garden: I dug, planted and weeded myself; in the evening the children watered. As the situation improved, I rested."

Visiting Giverny

My impressions

I'd love to visit Giverny once a month to see the garden changing colours as spring moves into summer, and then begin to fade as summer moves to autumn.

Monet's garden at Giverny is a wonderful delight for the senses.

Walking, or rather, strolling around the garden I enjoyed the delicate fragrances around me. Being there in April the garden was only beginning to bloom, yet the scents were still lovely.

Monet's garden has inspired me to plant more flowers. I have always enjoyed vegetable and herb gardening but I often neglect flowers. The beautiful brightly coloured garden was such a joy to be in. It's easy to see why Monet loved his home in Giverny, and why he loved to garden so much.

Monet Quote: Waterlilies

"It took me time to understand my water lilies ... I planted them without thinking of painting them ... A landscape doesn't imbue you in a day ... And the, all at once, I had the enchanting revelation of my pond. I picked up my palette. Since that time I've hardly had another model" Monet

Giverny is a must see! It is stunning indeed. Just avoid the overly expensive gift store :)

Monet was a genius artist, his paintings are so beautiful to see in person. Giverny is a beautiful place, it would be lovely to visit there. I'm a fan of Monet. The posters are lovely, and I might get a Monet poster print someday. Right now I have several original paintings on my walls. Some of them are ones that I painted, or my son created, or other artists. They never grow old, and neither does a Monet.

Strokes of genius: the magic of Monet...
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was both the most typical and the most individual painter associated with the Impressionist movement. His long life and extraordinary work were dedicated to a pictorial exploration of the sensations which reality, and in particular landscape, offer the human eye.
