Starting From Square One
At first when you start looking through all the financial aid information it can seem very confusing but in reality it's not. Financial aid has two basic categories that will help you determine what you need to do to earn more money for college.
How Much Money For College Can You Really Get?
Getting money for college is sometimes hard, difficult and down right hard to understand and in a way you're right but not completely. Financial aid for college is basically divided into two major categories. The first category is money for college that you have no obligation to pay back. This is stuff like grants, scholarships and in a loose sense, work study. The most popular and biggest grant you will receive if you qualify for it will be the Pell Grant. This grant will be given to you once you fill out the FAFSA. Currently the cap has been raised for the 2011 year to a maximum of $5550.Another source for your grants will come from your home state that you currently reside in. Depending on which state you live in, you might have to fill out additional information forms on top of your FAFSA in order to qualify for state grant money. One thing you need to do is continually check on the status of these critical forms to insure that they are complete and that you will be receiving your grants. Many students fill the forms out and never follow up on the progress only to find out that they had mistakes and lost out on some major money. Don't make this mistake or you will greatly regret it.
The next source that's important to look at is scholarship money for college. This is not exactly free because you have to put some effort into actually winning but it's the closest thing. The good thing is that you won't have to pay any of this money back. The first place you need to start looking for scholarships is in your local community. Drop by your counselor's office and ask for any packets or information they may have on scholarships in your area. These types of scholarships have less competition and are easier to win so don't miss out on this money for college.
Then you need to start making searches online through various websites like scholarships.com and fastweb.com. The best thing to do is to try and find those with less competition because it will be the best use of your time. Once you have exhausted these sources you need to follow up with the process and progress of each scholarships application. You don't want to leave any chances of leaving money on the table because you will soon realize if you haven't yet that college is expensive.
The last form of money for college that's not free but assures you a job is work study. The amount will be determined by the federal government. The job might be on campus or with an non-profit organization off campus. Either way you get a job that will help you pay for college.
The next category of money for college is the one you do have to pay back. These are what we call loans for college. Your next question is probably, which loans should I get? The answer is federal. Always get federal direct loans before private student loans no matter what. The reason is that you will have lower interest rates and when it comes to paying this money back, you will have more options. And if you qualify, you can also get loan forgiveness but try as hard as possible to stay away from loans.
You may want to consider a cheaper college if costs get to being way too high. The most important thing is getting the best deal at the best price considering you have a limited amount of money for college.
