Money Maker or Free Makes Using Coupons a Way to Decrease Debt

"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" Luke 11:9

Since I started "Extreme Couponing" in 2011, I have learned some important lessons. The first and most important lesson is you CAN spend too much money while using coupons. How is this possible? If you don't know the following things, you too could end up OVER SPENDING while using coupons.

(1) Know the difference between "Free" and "LIKE Free" items
(2) Be addicted to SAVING your money as opposed to addicted to using all your coupons
(3) Shop locally and use Rain Checks as opposed to burning up a lot of time and gas running to find in stock items
(4) Know EACH store's coupon policy. Coupons policies are NOT the same for different stores (example: CVS vs Rite Aid or Kroger vs Publix)
(5) Know what it means to "Stack" coupons and know how to "Stack" coupons to your advantage
(6) Never let your Rewards Bucks Expire!!!! (I didn't say coupon I said rewards bucks)

My new quest is to spend little or no money EVERY time I shop, especially for those things that are luxury items.

Free and "Like Free"

Knowing what is actually Free when couponing

What is actually free when couponing? If you pay tax on the item then nothing is free!!! Free is when you didn't have to pay one red cent for the item like if I gave you a banana. The fruit itself didn't cost you anything. So that's being technical. Free in the couponing world is anything you only have to pay tax or nothing to purchase the item. Are there free items out there to buy? YES, there sure are and lots of it. I hope to have those thing right here for you to see. These are the items I acquire FIRST. Second are my "Like Free" items. These are items that you buy, but the store gives you the FULL value of that item back in store credit or rewards. These types of transactions are most common at the drugstores like CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens. Are these items worth purchasing? You bet they are! Especially if you always buy those item full price prior to using coupons. Be aware that "Like Free" items will remove money from your checking account/cash where FREE items do not. Never forget this.

Making Money Transferring Your Prescriptions

$25.00 for Transferred Prescription

Kroger 11-9-11. I transferred a prescription from CVS to Kroger and got paid $25! This promo allowed me to get $53.00 in groceries for $9.38 after all coupons/store savings were applied!!! Some of the coupons came from a Kroger Home Mailer. Make sure you sign up for their Loyalty Card (see Sign Up and Save) for a chance to received coupons mailed to you. These Store Coupons can be stacked with Manufacturers coupons. Some of the store coupons I used include:

$5 off $50
$1 off $5 Produce
$0.40/2 Kroger Frozen Veggies

Kroger isn't the only store that will pay you for bring transferred prescriptions to their store. Some stores like CVS will even take coupons of competitor pharmacies. I recently received a $10 gift card from CVS by filling a new prescription and presenting a coupon from Target for $10 gift card for new prescriptions. Some of these offers are for a limited time so check your nearest Pharmacy to see what deals are available to you.

Walgreens has the same offer: https://www.walgreens.com/topic/s/prescription-transfers.jsp

Rite Aid sometimes sends 4 coupons at one time for $25+UP Rewards when you transfer a prescription in the "junk mail." Be on the lookout for this. It is separate from the weekly ad.

A great source of Free Coupons

Printing coupons is a convenient and reliable source of free coupons. Another great FREE source of coupons is a coupon group/swap. Search for one in your area. Secrets of a Coupon Pro is a Georgia coupon group that holds frequent coupon swaps at a local restaurant. But if you can't attend the actual swap for whatever reason you can still participate. This group has just started a Coupon Train with me as the Conductor. What is a Coupon Train? A Coupon Trains is simply a way of exchanging coupons by postal mail. You'll also meet some great Internet friends with the like interest of couponing and saving money. This is a great way to receive coupons you want while sending out coupons you don't want before they expire.

But if you do have expired coupons, keep them! Military families all across the Globe (outside of the U.S.) Can use coupons that are up to six months past their expiration date. Secrets of a Coupon Pro donates their expired coupons to military families. You can do the same with the help of Coupons to Troops.

Vegan Food Swap

May - THE BIG REVEAL!!

The Verdant LifeSeveral months ago I started a Coupon Train. A coupon train is a way to swap coupons by mail. It allows participants access to regional coupons they would not normally have a chance to get. This month I stumbled upon a different kind of swap. A Vegan Food Swap! Our coupon group had thought about swapping products also, but decided to keep it coupons. So I was very excited at the opportunity to get vegan food I might not normally buy or that may not even be sold in my area. The Vegan Food Swap is open to residents of US and Canada. For May, there were 63 participants!

I received the items in the picture from Vegan blogger Stacey Groth. You can check out her blog Stacey's Vegan Treats, http://staceysvegantreats.blogspot.com/. I had already tried the cookies from Sun Flour Baking Company before, but was glad to receive the cookie because it is one of my favorite! The other two items I had never seen before. I can't wait to give the Vegan Queso and Garlic/Sea Salt Sunflower Seeds a try! I'll update this post when I do try them. Thanks Stacey!

If you want to participate in the Vegan Food Swap, click on the picture to be redirected to the sign up form. (This is the webpage of the blogger I sent food to: http://veganfling.blogspot.com/).

Rain Check

Don't let an empty shelf rain on your Couponing Parade!

So you're ready to shop. You walk to the aisle of the items you are looking for and THAT SHELF SPACE IS EMPTY! You may want to get upset and blame all the "Shelf Clearing Couponers," but there is no need to get upset. Just get a rain check.

A rain check is a written agreement to give you the sale price of an item AFTER the sale do to the product not being in stock DURING the sale. For example, if bagged lettuce is on sale $2 ea, but when you go to purchase that item, there are none on the shelf. You can go to Customer Service and ask for a rain check. You will be given a piece of paper that will hold that price for you when the item is back in stock. The expiration of the rain check varies from store to store. Some rain checks are good for two weeks, 30 days, and sometimes they have NO EXPIRATION. If you don't see on the rain check itself which one applies, then just ask while your at Customer Service.

I love rain checks and sometime I deliberately go to the store at the end of a sale hoping there are no more of what I'm looking for just so I can get a rain check. Why would I do this? Take an item like bread. When it is buy one get one free, I stock up. But you can't get but so much bread even if you freeze some. So I buy as much as I think I can keep out and freeze, then head to the store the last hour and usually find it all gone. Getting a rain check allows me to get more bread at that same price when I run out and the bread is no longer on sale. It also allows you more time to get coupons for that item or more coupons if you only had a few. You can also use a rain check strategically when you have a Dollars or Percent off coupon. So now you are getting the BOGO free sale price, using a coupon for each item, AND getting Dollar/Percent of your entire purchase!!! Take a look at my 3/28/12 purchase at Publix in my "Recent Transaction" section.

When I see an empty shelf, I don't get mad, I GET A RAIN CHECK!

Never Let Your Reward Bucks Expire

Buy Items You Need/Want at a Good Price

No Nonscense SocksSometimes there are some things you just need. Maybe they are on sale, maybe not. Anytime you have loyalty rewards that will expire before good match ups are available, use them, Do NOT LET THEM EXPIRE! Although some stores MAY accept rewards past their expiration, do not count on this. It is not the norm. Better to use them than to lose them.

I have been in need of socks for some time now, but so caught up in the world of couponing, I just couldn't bare to spend money to get them. But today I had $9.00 worth of Rite Aid +UP Rewards that would expire before the next sale. I was done with this week's purchases. I went to look for items my family might need and I would feel good about spending my hard earned rewards. What do I see? No Nonsense Socks on sale Buy One Get One Free! So I bought black socks (short and long) $5.94 BOGO and White socks (short only) $4.49 BOGO.

Total Due: $9.98 + $0.60 tax. I paid with $9 +UP Rewards and $1.58 Out of Pocket (OOP).

Never ever hesitate to spend your rewards dollars on items you actually want/need (and that are not over priced)!!! I was lucky and found something I wanted on sale.

You can also look for Try Me Free Items or "Like Free" items in the store. Mail In Rebates turn your rewards into cash! Buying Like Free Items will give you new Reward Dollars with a new expiration date. Those new expiration dates can be just right for an upcoming new sale.

What To Do When "Couponing" is Slow?

USE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE!!!!

I hear lots of people who coupon complain when there is nothing good to buy. I LOVE IT. Today I would be going store to store but instead, since sales (coupon match ups ) in nearly all the stores are not that appealing to me, I'm home cooking and organizing the stuff I already have. What better way to save money than to:

(1) shower with the shower gel I already have (use the razors, shower gel, and deodorant too)
(2) brush my teeth with the toothpaste I already have
(3) Comb my hair using the products and hair accessories I already have
(4) EAT with all the frozen, fresh, and pantry items I already have (See link below: Being Vegan In Snellville)
(5) Do a little cleaning up with all the bathroom/kitchen detergents I already have
(6) Organize my binder by taking out expired coupons (getting them ready to donate to troops) replacing the old with the new coupons
(7) RELAX!!!!!

My favorite things to do when couponing is slow and I feel the sales aren't worth my gas are #4 and #7. You can give those a try anytime not just when things are slow.

Get Trial sized products for FREE

One of the good things about belonging to a coupon group is that you learn tips of the trade. I know coupons can be used to get trial size items, but I always forget about getting them. The other day I was reminded about this steal of a deal by fellow couponers. Elaine Hale, founder of the Facebook coupon group Making Cents of Coupons, is a pro at scoring trial sized items. Often you even MAKE money buying these little Treasures.

9/4/11
4 - Aquafresh Extreme Clean Trail size toothpaste - $0.97ea
1 - Tide Trial size Laundry Detergent = $0.97
1- Cascade 3pk trial size

Coupons used:
4 - $1.00 off Aquafresh Extreme Clean Any size (Aquafresh website)
1 - $1.00 off Any Tide (P&G home mailer)
1 - $1.00 off Any Cascade (home mailer)

The few cents overage from each item went towards the soy milk I went there to buy since I didn't have any coupon for Silk but it was on sale. Therefore I got all the trial sized items FREE + tax.

Active Try Me Free and other Mail in Rebate

Look for these items in store then get a refund by Mail in Rebate!!

A great way to try a product is when a Free by Mail-in-Rebate is offered. A few things to remember:
(1) Buy only ONE Try Me Free item per transaction/receipt. Many offers require you to send in the original receipt.
(2) Make sure you read the complete offer to make sure your purchase qualifies.
(3) Buy the product during the offer period. Make sure you are buying an item BEFORE the offer expires.
(4) Follow the rebate instructions EXACTLY. Sometimes offers are limited to one per household or for up to a certain dollar amount.

I like to buy one of these types of offers when I have a dollars or percent off coupon for the store. I also look for coupons for the Try Me Free Product. Sometimes you get the full value with coupons use and sometimes you just get what you paid. Sometimes the offer will say which applies.

Kroger 1-2-3 Rewards Visa Card

Pays you back for your everyday purchases

My sister and I use Kroger's 1-2-3 Rewards Visa Card when shopping. This month she received $45 Kroger Dollars back and I received $30. You earn 1 point for out-of -store purchased, 2 point for in-store purchases, and 3 points for their family of brand purchases. For every 3,000 you eard $15 Kroger Dollars. They also send a few Store Coupons with your rewards. Check out this program by visiting 123rewardscard.com/friends2 or by calling 1-866-256-8093 ext. 83652. Use referral code: 40295763719 and receive $25 Kroger grocery Coupon when you apply and are approved. This is really good if you currently use Credit Cards with NO rewards. Change to this card and what your normally purchase starts to pay you back. I always use this card when shopping at Publix, Drug Stores, paying bills, gas, etc. I also always pay the FULL balance at the end of the month so not to incure interes fees.

I really took my time and read your lens. It's really good! I am doing some of the things that you said. I am still new at couponing and love it. My husband said I gave him a raise with all the savings. I have cut my budget and still have money left over. I do have to be careful not to try to use all the coupons just because I have it.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my lens. I'm glad you found it helpful. Your husband has it exactly right. Some time the way to have more money is to SAVE more money! Couponing got me out of the RED in a very short amount of time. I hope it will do the same for others.

Theresa, as you know, I am new to this and often struggle with obtaining the maximum for the minimum. I find myself often overspending because I have a coupon. Your articles and examples are so helpful. Thanks a million!
  • WarnerRobins2 Oct 16, 2011 @ 1:57 pm | delete
    Callie,
Believe me when I say I know EXACTLY what you are going through. You have what I call "Coupon Attachment." If we could only have that same attachment to our money. Look at it this way, using a coupon incorrectly will waste your money!!! I donate my expired coupons. This has really helped me not feel the need to use a coupon before it expires. I also give coupons to people while in the store when I see them shopping for and item I have a coupon for, but haven't found the right deal to use it on. Callie once you see she shear joy you bring to a person when you give a coupon, you will no longer be so attached to it. You'll be giving it a good home with someone else.
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with other. It will help someone else down the line.
