Booking Your Trip Early Can Save You Money
From Smart Traveler Newsletter / Money Saving Travel Tips
Booking your flight twenty one days or more in advance can make your air fare much less expensive. Airlines like to be able to plan ahead and they also figure that if you have to fly on short notice, you may not have a choice. The advance purchase schedule varies from 21 days to 3 days. The lowest transcontinental fares usually require a 21 day advance.
There is usually a 14 day advance purchase fare, and there may be a 7 day advance purchase too. Occasionally there will be special 3 day advance fares. These usually appear during fare wars and last only a short while. This system is a great way to find information and make a reservation during a fare war without waiting on hold forever.
You can save some cash on car rentals by booking earlier, as well. Car rental suppliers have sophisticated revenue management systems and know very quickly when competitors have closed off their inventory, often resulting in immediate rate increases.
If you have reserved your rental car in advance, these rate increases wont affect your cost. Renting as off-airport locations can result in savings as well. There are sometimes fewer taxes and fees at off-airport locations. The best time of day to rent
a car to get the best rate is afternoon on Thursdays with a Saturday night stay over.
Reserving your hotel room well in advance of your planned trip can also save you some money. Competition on the Web has made pricing very competitive, so be sure to buy a low price guaranteed hotel whenever possible.
Buying a non-refundable room may get a better rate, but beware. Non-refundable means you can't cancel for any reason.

Travel Agencies: Do They Save You Money?
From Smart Traveler Newsletter / Money Saving Travel Tips
Travel Agencies can save you money. When the Internet came of age, online travel agencies sprang up like wild flowers in May. The three best one out there in cyber space are Travelocity, Expedia, and Orbitz. If you are just mort comfortable dealing with a human than booking your trip online, however, keep these considerations in mind when choosing your travel agency.
Travel, in general, is usually split into two broad categories - 'corporate' or business type travel, and 'leisure' or personal, vacation type travel.
Although agencies will be pleased to help you with all types of travel, most agencies tend to be generally stronger either in corporate type travel services or in leisure type travel services. Ask
a travel agency 'are you primarily corporate or are you primarily leisure'?
There are also some very specialized travel agencies. For example, it is possible that an agency might specialize only in selling cruises. Another type of specialization might be an agency that sells only one destination (perhaps the South Pacific).
Other agencies concentrate on a particular type of travel - maybe singles travel or gay travel or maybe golf or ski trips. Some agencies specialize in disabled travel or family travel, or school group travel, or probably just about any other distinction you could think of.

If you have special rather than generic needs, see if you can find a specialist travel agency that is experienced in helping people travel who have similar problems. Ask the agency for a list of clients that you can contact and then do exactly that - call some of these current clients.
Ask them 'hard' not easy questions - for example, ask them 'what was the biggest problem you ever had with the agency, and how did the agency respond'. Try and get beyond the polite praise and find out not only how good the agency can be on a good day, but also how bad the agency can be on a bad day, and what the agency does to correct service shortcomings.

Rich.
