Money and Markets is the culmination of eight decades of hard work and research, beginning when my father, Irving Weiss, first went to Wall Street in 1926.

Fortunately, Dad didn't get caught in the crash of 1929, mainly because he was skeptical of the market's rise, but also because he didn't have the money to invest. His parents were recent immigrants to America, with barely enough to keep food on the table.

Nevertheless, Dad was so confident the stock market was going to fall that he borrowed $500 from his mother to go short. By the time the Dow hit rock bottom, he had made close to $100,000.

That's also around the time he turned bullish, buying GM, AT&T and other Dow stocks with both hands. On the next trading day, they turned sharply higher and just kept going. But Dad's biggest success was with silver, gold and mining shares.

Years later, he wrote: "The first gold bugs of the twentieth century were friends of mine - including Bernard Baruch, an advisor to several presidents. Together we accumulated gold coins and gold shares when no one else would touch them."

"Most investors today have no idea how huge the profits were in gold shares in the 1930s. Homestake, for instance, went from a bottom of $65 per share after the crash to $130 and change in 1931. From there, it doubled again to more than $350 a share by 1933. By the time it peaked in 1936, it had climbed to $540 a share - an astronomical gain of more than $470 per share."

"We tried to get Joe Kennedy, the father of JFK, to join us, recommending that he load up on silver. But his staff was against it. So he missed the opportunity to buy the metal at 17 cents an ounce."

As I was growing up, Dad was not only a good father, but also a great teacher, mentor, and partner.

In 1972, he encouraged me to take over the family business, and I founded my own company, Weiss Research, Inc.

And a quarter-century later, he passed away. But he has left a great legacy of knowledge and wisdom for me and my entire company.
