Not going to make you rich, but helps!
General Overview
PTC (paid to click): PTC sites consist in making money by clicking on ads the site provides you. You watch the ads for about 30 seconds, and get paid. However, don't expect to become rich this way! You will only get paid about 1 cent per ad, after all. You often get to watch an average of 15 ads per day, so that is 15 cents a day, which means a grand total of 4,50 dollars a month for spending 10 minutes a day clicking! Not impressive...So, why bother? Well... There is a way to make more of a profit. Just tell your friends about this great site you found, tell them how they can earn money, and basically just try to convince them to join. If they do decide to follow your recommendations, you will get paid for your clicks and for the clicks of each and every one of your referrals!
However, unless you are friend with everyone in the world, not even this will be enough. So, again, why bother, right? Well, if you thought these kind of sites were worthless, you were wrong, again. The biggest sites offer you the possibility of buying referrals.
How? Well, there are plenty of people how find these sites by themselves, so the site offers you the chance to make them count as your referrals by paying a little fee of about 1 dollar each referral, or even less if you buy big amounts of referrals!

Identifying scam PTC sites
You dont want to be fooled, right?
Identifying scam PTC sites:First off, what is a scam site? A scam site is one that tries to make profit by making you believe you will get paid, thus earning money for the owner of the site. It works something like this: you click on ads, if we take PTC scam sites, and you never get paid. Easy.
So, how to identify PTC scam sites? There are some pretty obvious symptoms of scam sites, but they are not limited to just these. If you want more info, be sure to check this fantastic lens by a fellow lensmaster, delfinas. How to tell if a new PTC is a scam
* Have you ever heard the phrase "too good to be true"? Well, you shouldn't be surprised to hear it applies here. Simply put, if some site says it will pay you a ridiculously high amount of money (Personally, Ive seen sites which offered up to 1 dollar per add. Pretty suspicious...) for something as easy as clicking a few ads, it most probably is a scam.
* Be really careful with this point. I mean it, this does not always apply, but is a good reason to make you suspect. If a site does not have a forum, there is a possibility that it is a scam. Because, why not have a forum i f you have nothing to hide?
* If the site has no recent news, it most probably is a scam. On a site with no recent news, how can you know it is not inactive?
Don't get fooled!
If a site offers to pay you more than what it earns per click, it's most probably a SCAM! Don't join a site that says it will pay you 100 bucks for clicking an ad!

And last, listen to what this wise guy, and fellow lensmaster, has to say:
"Do a google search
Before you register a new account in a PTC site do a google search about the site you want to become member. Google search phrase: Company name + scam (for example bux.to scam)" Panos21. People talk...
And they don't say pretty things about PTC sites!
If you ask me, these guys are simply impatient and don't bother to wait for payout... (For a more in-depth analysis, check my blog)
Anyway, that's just my opinion, and I want yours too!
So, what do YOU think?

Yes, about 20% of them do pay. I personally prefer the PTC programs that offer instant payouts like Neobux, BuxOut or SandraClicks or those that pay in less than a week. Waiting weeks and months is just crazy!
I have some recommendation listed here:

I guess some of them pay but far more are scams; this is why PTC sites are not supported by Paypal in most cases. I have been working on some PTC sites but I never stayed long enough to get paid (exept for Numenmail which is a scam); but I think there are far better ways to make money online; they might be a little more difficult than PTC but at least they don't turn people into clicking zombies!

I spent a lot of time on Gather to get to the point where I got paid, but I'm still waiting for the cash to come in. I guess they are ok if you build up a lot of referrals, but then and only then. Otherwise you are relying on people to click - it takes up too much time.

Don't skip this!
To sum everything up, the key to being successful with PTC sites is:
1) Persevere, don't stop trying just because your first experience wasn't a pleasant one!
2) Don't waste your money! Don't buy referrals until you are 100% sure they will pay you!
