The Little 4
Not often do you want an analyst to lump you into a group dubbed the "Little 4." However, that is what Redmonk analyst Cote did when he described the leading open source systems management vendors: Zenoss, Hyperic, OpenQRM, and GroundWork.
The Little 4, coincidently, are challenging the well established and proprietary Big 4 systems management vendors: IBM, HPC, HP, and CA.
In a Zenoss blog post titled "On the Shoulders of Giants," Zenoss CTO and Co-founder Erik Dahl outlines three reasons the Little 4 are poised to compete with the mature systems management market:
- The Little 4 learn from the mistakes and hard lessons, such as implementation, importance, and architecture, of the Big 4.
- A low cost to high feature set ratio enables the Little 4 to reach the small to medium sized business.
- The Little 4 are commercial open source companies that leverage community development practices to deliver innovative solutions quickly.
The Little 4, we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance, not by virtue of any sharpness on sight on our part, or any physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size. --Erik Dahl
