The Monkees Theme Song

Here we come
Walking down the street
We get the funniest looks from
Everyone we meet.

Hey, hey we're the Monkees,
and people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy singing,
to put anybody down.

We go wherever we want to,
Do what we like to do.
We don't have time to get restless,
There's always something new.

Hey, hey we're the Monkees,
and people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy singing,
to put anybody down.

We're just trying to be friendly,
Come watch us sing and play.
We're the young generation,
And we got something to say.

Hey, hey we're the Monkees,
You never know where we'll be found.
So you'd better get ready,
We may be comin to your town.

The Monkees

Based loosely on The Beatles' films A Hard Day's Night and Help!, The Monkees featured the antics of a fictional pop-rock group. When they came walkin' down the street in 1966, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Mike Nesmith were virtual unknowns. A six-week crash course in improvisational acting with director James Frawley paid off. The four actors gelled as a team and morphed into a real pop group. After an auspicious start—The Monkees original pilot set a new ratings low for a pilot—the show went on to dominate its time slot for the entire 58-episode run from 1966 to 1968. In 1967, James Frawley landed an Emmy award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy and the The Monkees won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series.

A Few Facts About The Monkees

Courtesy of Wikipedia

The Monkees were a pop singing quartet assembled in Los Angeles in 1966 for the American television series The Monkees, which aired from 1966 to 1968. The primary members were Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork, who were the public face of a music production system under the supervision of Don Kirshner. At the start, the band members provided vocals, and were given some performing and production opportunities, but they eventually fought for and earned the right to collectively supervise all musical output under the band's name. The group undertook several concert tours, allowing an opportunity to perform as a live band as well as on the TV series. Although the show was cancelled in 1968, the band continued releasing records until 1970. In the 1980s, the television show and music experienced a revival, which led to a series of reunion tours, and new records featuring various incarnations of the band's lineup.

Aspiring filmmakers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider were inspired by the Beatles' film A Hard Day's Night to develop a television series about a fictional rock 'n' roll group. The duo sold the idea to Screen Gems television and in September 1965, Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter ran an ad seeking "Folk & Roll Musicians-Singers for acting roles in new TV series." As many as 400 hopefuls showed up to be considered as one of the "4 insane boys" who would be the stars of the show. From this pool, four were chosen to become the fictional band The Monkees.

In a later interview, Peter Tork relayed an incident that happened before the filming of the show began. The producers wanted the boys to get to know each other so they would send them off on various excursions. At one point they all went to a restaurant to get something to eat. The boys had placed their orders and the server brought them their salads. Not knowing each other very well, Peter, Mike and Mickey had quietly began eating their salads when Davy Jones looked over at them all undignified and called them "cretins". Well, Peter, was curious how the English ate salads so he watched as Davy cut his lettuce into one inch squares, set his knife and fork down, reached into the salad bowl and grabbed as much salad as he could get into his hand and stuffed it all in his mouth. Apparently this broke the ice between the four and the rest is history.

BTW, this is great lens, I was a big fan of the Monkees growing up.
