Monkey-Nut - anacardium humile - Wild Cashew
Monkey-nut, anacardium humile, is a lowly shrub, commonly only 1-2 m high. It is a relative of the cashew tree, Anacardium occidentale, but it grows best in drier tropical climates. It is a indigenous of the scrublands of central Brazil where it is as well cultivated. It is also cultivated in Peru, Central America, Guiana and West Indies.
The monkey-nut develops a fruit (nut) very similar to the common cashew and a swollen fruit stem much smaller and somewhat more acid tasting than the cashew apple. The shell of the fruit has fine thin layers, the intermediate one having acrid, caustic oil, called cardol, which is destroyed by heating; hence the kernels are roasted prior to being eaten.
The Fruit is consumed fresh, made into conserves and the juice of the fruit once expressed and fermented yields a enjoyable wine. A gum, similar to gum arabic, known as cadju gum, is released from this tree. The plant is utilized to treat sexually transmitted disease by local people in its native region.
Propagation of the monkey nut is primarily by seeds.
