Why do we monogram items?

Merriam-Webster defines a monogram as "a sign of identity usually formed of the combined initials of a name."

Historically, the monogram was used in several capacities, from the Greeks using monograms to identify rulers on coins, to using monograms to identify laundry several hundred years ago. The embroidered monogram typically indicated wealth, showing that one could afford more than the stamped on version of the monogram.
