How to Play Monopoly Deal

Monopoly Deal is basically Monopoly in the form of a card game.

It is a quick, 15 minute game for 2-5 players and is recommended for ages 8 It may seem difficult at first, but it is really easy to catch on to.

To win the game, you must collect 3 full property sets but watch out for other players and cards such as Debt Collectors, Forced Deals, and of course the Deal Breaker.

This page will teach you how to play Monopoly Deal, or brush you up if you have already played.

How to Win Monopoly Deal

type=textBe the first player to collect 3 complete sets of properties that are different colors (like shown in picture)

How to Set Up Monopoly Deal

type=text1. Remove the 4 Quick Start Rules and either put them aside or hand them out for reference
2. Shuffle the rest of the cards
3. Deal 5 cards to each player
4. You can look at the cards you were given at this point, but remember to keep them a secret
5. The cards that are left go face down in the center to create the draw pile
6. Decide who goes first
7. Play clockwise from the first person

On Your Turn

type=textIf you have no cards at the beginning of your turn, take 5 from the draw pile

then

Take 2 Cards

  • take the 2 cards from the draw pile and add them to your hand

    then

    Play Up To 3 Cards

    1. Put money/action cards into your bank
  • if you put an action card in your bank, it has to stay as a money card for the rest of the game, even if you pay it to someone else.

    2. Put down properties into your collection
  • lay the property cards in front of you to bulit up your property set
  • the number of cards needed to complete a set is shown on the property card
  • reorganizing your properties can only take place on your turn
  • if you relize that you won while someone else is going, you must wait until your turn to say so
  • you can collect as many property cards as you want, but you only need 3 full sets (with different colors) to win

    3. Play Action Cards Into the Center
  • the instructions on how to use the action cards are on them
  • if you pick up an action card you can use it during that same turn or on a later turn
  • you can also use action cards as money in your bank. it's value is in a red circle in the corner of the card

    End your turn
  • if you have more than 7 cards in your hand at the end of your turn, discard extras so you onky have 7 left
  • if you have no cards left in your hand, take 5 at the beginning of your next turn

    This is Important!

    type=textHow to pay other players and use your money

  • cards can NEVER go back into your hand
  • NEVER play with cards from your hand, only from in front of you
  • you can pay with cards from your bank, property collection, or a combination of both. remember, you choose how you want to pay, not the other players
  • change is not given, if you pay more than was needed, you don't get any money back
  • if you pay another player with property cards, those cards must go into their property collection, not their bank
  • if you don't have any cards in front of you to pay with, you don't have to pay at all
  • Properties

  • lay property cards down (like shown in the picture) to create property sets
  • if you get 3 complete property sets that are all different colors, you win the game
  • there are 10 different color property sets
  • you can use property cards to pay other players (then they go into the other player's property collection - not their banks
  • you can collect as many properties as you want
  • it says on the property card how many cards of that color you need to complete the set

    Wild Cards

  • you can use wild cards to help you complete your property collections
  • you use the wild cards as substitute for property cards
  • the wild cards can only be used for a set if they have the color of the set on them
  • you can swap wild cards to different sets, but only on your turn
  • there are 2 multi-colored wild cards which can be used on any property
  • the multi-colored wild cards can't be used as money in your bank
  • Houses/Hotels

  • you can add housed or hotels to any full property set
  • houses and hotels add to the rent you can charge for properties
  • you can't have more than one house and one hotel to any set
  • hotels can only be added to a set if there is already a hosue on it
  • houses or hotels can't be added to a Railroad or Utillity set
  • houses and hotels can be put in a bank and used as money
  • if someone pays you with a house or hotel card, you can't use it on your properties. it must go in you bank as money

    Draw and Discard Piles 

    Rent

  • you can only use rent cards to charge people money if you have a property of that color out in front of you
  • pay attention to whether the rent card you use says to charge one player or all players
  • rent cards can be used as money when you put them in your bank
  • if you receive a rent card as payment, you can't use it to charge rent. it has to go in your bank and be used as money
  • it will say on the property card how much to charge for rent
  • you can use a multi-colored rent card to charge one person for any of your properties
  • if you have a house or hotel of your property set, check the card to see how much more you should charge for rent
  • you can use a 'double the rent' card to charge players double what the normal rent would be
  • 'double the rent' cards can be used as money in your bank and must continue to be money for the rest of the game

    Action Cards

    Debt Collector, It's My Birthday, Pass Go

  • use this card to force one player to pay you the amount stated on the card
  • can be put in your bank and used as money for the rest of the game


  • It's My Birthday
  • when you play this card, place in the discard pile and all players have to pay you the amount stated on the card
  • can be put in your bank and used as money for the rest of the game

    Pass Go
  • when you play a Pass Go card, place it in the discard pile and you can pick up 2 card from the draw pile
  • more than one Pass Go card can be used per turn
  • can be put in your bank and used as money for the rest of the game
  • Deals

    Sly Deal, Deal Breaker, Forced Deal

  • use this card to steal property from another player
  • you choose which property you take from them
  • the property you steal has to be added to your property collection
  • you can't steal a card if it is part of a full set
  • can be put in your bank and used as money for the rest of the game

    Deal Breaker
  • use this card to steal one full set of property cards from any other player
  • this is definitely a card you want to have a 'Just Say No' card for
  • can be put in your bank and used as money for the rest of the game

    Forced Deal
  • use this card to swap one of your property cards with another player's
  • you choose which property cards are swapped when you play this card
  • can be put in your bank and used as money for the rest of the game

    Just Say No

    A good card to have

  • you can use this card to 'say no' to any Action card someone uses against you
  • you can use a Just Say No card at any point during the game
  • if you use this card and another player puts down a Just Say No card, yours is cancelled
  • Just Say No cards can be put in your bank and used as money for the rest of the game

    *TIP: Just Say No cards usually don't come to you very often, so make sure you save it. If something small happens and you have enough money, you should pay it. Save it for when someone puts down a Deal Breaker or another card like that

      what if someone has park place and a wildcard....then i get boardwalk and a wildcard? can we both have the blue sets as full sets?

      yes - each player can have a blue set used to win. however, one single player can't use multiple blue sets to win.
