Jamaica: Best Time to Visit Montego Bay, Jamaica

"When is the Best Time to Visit Montego Bay, Jamaica?"

One of the biggest factors in planning your trip to Jamaica is deciding when to go. When deciding you should consider the three most important aspects; (1) Costs (2) Peak/Off-Peak Season and (3) Jamaica Weather. What you want will determine the best time of the year to visit Jamaica. If you want a low cost, less crowed vacation and don't mind the possibility of a rain shower than the summertime is an excellent time for you to go. If you want an almost guaranteed rain-free vacation and don't mind paying more and either don't mind or enjoy the crowds, than the wintertime is perfect for you.

The peak tourist season runs during the winter season with Christmas and Easter being the busiest times. The winter season runs from mid-December to mid-April. It is the most popular time to visit Jamaica and requiring the greatest amount of pre-planning. You should make your reservations 2 or 3 months prior to your desired winter season visit to assure that you can get your desired accommodations with some resorts needing at least 1 year in advance. This may be the most popular time to visit Montego Bay, Jamaica, but, not necessarily the best. This increase in tourism causes an increase in prices, not to mention crowds.

Taking a trip to Montego Bay doesn't have to be expensive. You can save a lot of money traveling in the less-crowded summer season, from mid-April to mid-December. The slight dip in visitors in the off-peak season often causes prices to ease up quite a bit. In hopes of boosting tourism, many hotels offer discounts on rooms during that time with 20-50% off or more! In addition to the reduced rates, many of the larger resorts also offer incentive packages that often include air, hotel, car rentals or other benefits. Cheaper flights are also offered by airlines that frequently fly to the islands. Traditionally, airline ticket prices are reduced for travel between mid-April and mid-December. However, it's always wise to research early and keep an eye out for deals that may appear as the winter rush begins to drop off. Vacationing in the summer can help alleviate some of the cost, while still providing all of what makes Montego Bay, Jamazing! Travelocity SAVES You 20% or MORE on Air Fares

Jamaica Weather: Rainfall in Jamaica

"When is the Rainy Season in Jamaica?"

Jamaica has a tropical climate and is typically sunny year-round, although, there is two distinct rainy seasons in Jamaica. It rains the most during May, June, September, October, and November, with the heaviest rains in September and October. Each day it is likely to rain for a short while in the afternoon. Though it's not likely to spoil your day, it can put a damper on things. Rain can fall at any time of the year, however, and normally comes in short heavy showers, often followed by sun.

This is followed by sunniest time of the year, running from December to April, and the most popular with tourists. However, Jamaica has a lot of sunshine throughout the year, even during the rainy seasons. Any rainfall during this period is usually a result of cold fronts migrating southwards from North America, but in the mountainous areas showers can develop on any day.

Annual rainfall averages is 50.7 inches, although, accumulation varies dramatically across the island. With the eastern (or windward) coast receiving a lot more rain than anywhere else on the island. Humidity is relatively high year-round, ranging from 71% to 77% in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

You can check out The Jamaica Guide for the average monthly rainfall in Jamaica.

Jamaica Weather: Hurricane Season in Jamaica

"When is the Hurricane Season in Jamaica?"

The official hurricane season in Jamaica lasts from June 1 to November 30 with August and September being the peak months. (All the hurricanes that have struck Jamaica this century have done so before mid-September). As they say in the Caribbean "June too soon, July stand by, August come they must, September remember, October all over".

Jamaica lies in the Caribbean hurricane belt, although, very few actually touch Jamaica. Direct hits on Jamaica by major storms are so rare; the last major storm to hit the island was Hurricane Gilbert, which came ashore in 1988. Most often, the islands will only receive the heavy rains that come on the outskirts of a hurricane, avoiding the most extreme weather conditions.

Additionally, with today's technology, advanced warnings for hurricanes will reach you long before you are ever in danger, so keep an eye on the weather in Montego Bay before you leave for your vacation so you can be prepared. To encourage travelers, many offer weather guarantees, so, check with your resort to see if they offer this prior to booking during season. If you book your summer vacation by July 17th you can take advantage of Travelocity's Weather Guarantee...Exclusive Sunshine Guarantee - if your vacation is rained out, it's FREE!* (ends 7/17).

If you hear that a hurricane has hit before you are to arrive, all is not lost. You may not have to alter your vacation at all, but do call ahead to verify current weather conditions and the extent of damage to the island; you may also want to contact local business owners as to whether they are open for business or when they think they will be operating again.

You can also check out The Meteorological Service of Jamaica for Hurricane Warnings in Jamaica.
