The Medieval Hamlet of Montepulciano, Tuscany

The medieval hamlet Montepulciano is the highest hill town in Tuscany at nearly 2000 ft and has excellent views of the local vineyards. Famous for the excellent red wine of the same name (Vino Nobile Montepulciano). There are many places offering 'free' wine tasting and judging by the number of tourist carrying packages containing bottles of wine, their produce is hard to resist (especially after a few "free" glasses).

Montepulciano is a wonderful place to spend a few days absorbing the special atmosphere of this enchanting part of Italy: getting lost in the ancient narrow streets; visiting the churches and museums or just sitting in a cafe or restaurant enjoying the local cuisine and of course the wine.

Many people come to Montepulciano specifically to taste and buy the delicious Vino Nobile Montepulciano which is made from Sangiovese and other grapes (but not the Montepulciano grape grown in this region) This wine should not be confused with the similarly named Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine which is made in the east-central Italian region of Abruzzo using the Montepulciano grape variety.
