Monterey - the First Big Rock Festival

The Monterey Pop Festival was held June 16 - 18, 1967 at the County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California, also the site of established folk, jazz and blues festivals. It was the first large rock festival, with around 200,000 people attending, and served as a template for the Woodstock Festival in New York State two years later. Many of the performers got their first big-time exposure at Monterey.

The festival was captured on film by D. A. Pennebaker to become the hit documentary Monterey Pop. Audio recordings from the festival continue to be very popular.

One of the Best Organized Rock Festivals

The Monterey Pop Festival was put together in only seven weeks, yet it stands as one of the best-organized festivals of its kind. The organizers, headed by promoter Lou Adler and John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, producer Alan Pariser, and publicist Derek Taylor, wanted to provide the best of everything for the performers. The sound system set a standard for future events, and in the film, performer David Crosby can be seen remarking on its greatness. There was an on-site first aid clinic because they knew there would be a need. It was, after all, the '60s, and drugs were everywhere. The festival security worked with the Monterey police, who, according to Lou Adler, never expected to like the people they came in contact with as much as they did.

Monterey Pop Festival Film Intro

This film intro lists the performers in the film in order of their appearance. I have used the list as the basis for organizing the videos. Videos below Ravi Shankar's are for those performers not in the film.

The order of appearance in the film appears to differ widely from the order of appearance at the festival, given that Scott McKenzie and the Mamas & Papas didn't perform until Sunday.

Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco (Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)" became an unofficial anthem for the Summer of Love. The song was written for McKenzie by his friend John Phillips of the Mamas & Papas.
