Montessori Celebration of Life - A birthday party the Montessori way
Happy Birthday! The Montessori birthday celebrations enjoyed by our grandchildren are a treasure. As you will see from the video clips on this page, every school celebrates birthdays differently, but the walk around the sun seems to be traditional for Montessori schools everywhere.
We recently enjoyed Zach's celebration. As a 6 year old, Zach proudly carried the globe and held his head high as he walked around the sun and his mom read his story and shared photographs with the class. She told stories of his growth and milestones along the way.
After the walk around the sun, and singing the Montessori birthday song, Zach chose special friends to help him serve the snack and the room was suddenly filled with quiet conversation, "would you like a cookie?" "Thank you." "No, thank you." "Excuse me." Perfect manners from such tiny children! This grandma was delighted!
Of course, as soon as time came for recess, they were running and playing and yelling and having a fabulous time -- but for the 20 minutes of celebration, they were attentive, excited, and sharing this happy time with Zach.
As you scroll down, you will see different versions of the Montessori birthday celebration. I do hope you take the time to watch a few of them. My personal favorite is the one that includes the Montessori birthday song. You will see the words to that song a little further down on the page. Thank you for visiting. I hope you will return often. Enjoy!

- This will be our last year for such precious celebrations. They don't do them after kindergarten. I just love the concept!
