Montreal
Some interesting facts about living and working in Montreal

The greater Montreal area has a population of over 3,600,000 and is Canada's second largest city.
Montreal's official language is French and it ranks as the second biggest French-speaking city after Paris, France.
According to the last census only 13.2% of residents in Montreal say English is their mother tongue. But Montreal is unique in Canada in that most residents have a working knowledge of both English and French.
If you visit Montreal not speaking French should not be a problem since almost all businesses hire staff that can speak English.
There are more opportunities to those who can speak and write well in both languages.
Many companies prefer to hire fluently bilingual staff or at least with a working knowledge of both languages. This is because Montreal's bilingual nature where business is often done in both languages at the same time and the ability to switch between languages is a strong asset. This often happens in written communications such as emails.
Since almost all companies want to hire bilingual staff to deal with their customers, those that only speak one language will have a more difficult time finding customer service or sales jobs.
Since the majority of Montreal is French, not being able to speak French will put you at a disadvantage in the job market. Even with this disadvantage there are many jobs available working in companies where the language of business is English or for companies that do customer service or sales to the United States or other parts of Canada.
Montreal is a major center for commerce, industry, culture and world-affairs. In 2005, it's GDP was $120 Billion, which ranks it 39th in the world.
Montreal has a big presence in the following industries: aerospace, electronic goods, pharmaceuticals, printed goods, software engineering, video game development, telecommunications, textile and apparel manufacturing, tobacco, transportation.
Montreal also has a strong service sector with activities in civil, mechanical, and process engineering, finance, higher education, and research and development.
The port of Montreal is the world's largest inland port. The port is a major entry point in North America for goods and resources from overseas.
Notable companies which are headquartered in the Montreal area include: AbitibiBowater, Air Canada, Alcan, BCE, Bombardier, CAE, Canadian National Railway, CGI Group, Cirque du Soleil, Desardins, Hydro-Quebec, Molson, Power Corporation, Pratt and Whitney Canada, Quebecor, RioTinto, SNC-Lavalin, Tembec

Five Sales Resume Tips
Looking for a new job in sales? Make sure you resume is a sales focused resume.
Here are five tips for sales resumes:
1. Begin with an objective statement that indicates the position you are applying for and that you really want this job, not just any job.
2. You should highlight your accomplishments in sales. If you can provide specfics even better. How much were your sales? How many accounts did you open? Did you win any awards? Were you a member of the President's Club?
3. The timeline in your resume should show that you can keep a job and don't change jobs too often. How often is too often? There is no hard and fast rule but if you change jobs every year for the past five years it won't look good. If you do have a history of changing jobs too often the only remedy is to stay at a job for a few years.
4. Do you have any special knowledge, experience, or training in the job or industry or company you are applying for? If you do, make sure this stands out.
5. Show what you can bring to the table. Is it contacts, clients, enthusiasm, or a history of success?
Eximius Personnel's List of Social Networking Sites
Find a Montreal Job on Social Networking Sites
- This is probably the best social networking site for people who are serious about their careers.
- Not traditionally seen as a place to network for business. It is common for recruiters to check on applicant's profile so at the very least make sure what you show in public is what you feel comfortable with potential employers seeing.
- Visual CV
- This website is all about making an online resume and sharing it with your network. What makes this site special is you can add photos and even videos to your resume.
- Naymz reputation network
- Naymz is similar to LinkedIn in the sense it is intended for professional networking. Every member has a reputation score from 1 to 10 and if you build up your contact list, get references, and have a complete profile then your rating will be high. Another benefit of Naymz is profiles get indexed quickly on Google.
- ERE (Recruiter Networking)
- This site is intended for recruiters but anyone can join. This site is a great source of information on many topics of interest to human resource professionals.
Eximius Personnel's Book List
Books we have read and recommend
What Color Is Your Parachute? 2007: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers
Review by Jon Lyles: This book has been a perennial best seller since the 80s. The book gets updated every year so it is also up to date with the most effective job searching techniques. If you want to sharpen your job searching skills then this book is a must buy. I have personally applied the techniques in this book and they worked for me. I have two friends that have read this book and it also helped them.
Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer (Resume Magic Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer)
Invest in your resume. If you write it correctly you will get more requests for interviews. If it is poorly written it won't even be read in its entirety.
Best Answers to the 201 Most Frequently Asked Interview Questions
Invest in your interview skills. It still amazes me how many people go into interviews totally unprepared.
