Moonlight Photographs

Are you fascinated by the moon? Do you love to catch a glimpse of the full moon or stay up late to catch a lunar eclipse?

This lens will highlight my photos taken of the full moon on several different nights. It will also show some photos that I took of the total lunar eclipse in 2007.

I have added links showing moon rise times and lunar eclipse table for those that are interested.

Sit back, relax and enjoy some views of the beautiful moon!

Super Moon

March 19, 2011

On March 19, 2011 the full moon was the closest it has been to earth in 18 years. We were staying at a condo on the beach in Florida and it seems like everyone was out on the beach or on their balconies looking at the beautiful full moon. Here are some photos that I took.

Full Moon through the Clouds

moon over ocean- March 29, 2010

I stepped out on the balcony of our condo in Florida and was greeted with this beautiful sight. The full moon was gliding in and out of the clouds, casting a shimmering beam of light on the ocean.

March 2010 Full Moon- Early Evening

This photo was taken at the same time as the one above, only about an hour earlier in the evening. I love the way the moon seems to change as the evening progresses.

December Full Moon

full moon on a clear night

December 1st was a beautiful clear night and I decided to take an early evening walk in my neighborhood. I took along my camera to take photos of the Christmas decorations and was delighted to see a beautiful full moon. We had a late frost this year so there are still leaves on some of the Bradford Pear trees. This photo was taken of the moon just over the top of a tree.

My Adventures in Photographing the Moon

wonderful moon light

The moon is always an interesting subject to photograph. While we were in Florida in March of 2009, I was delighted to find there was a full moon that I could easily photograph from our balcony. The moon shining over the water made a very compelling photo opportunity.

The first night I was caught off guard by it suddenly appearing in the early evening sky. I ran for my tripod and camera and was able to capture some great photos. The next night I assumed it would come out at the same time, but to my surprise it was much later when it first appeared.

Now I was curious, I pulled out the newspaper and looked for moonrise times. I was surprised to see that the times varied considerably (by more than 30 minutes) each night. Each night it rises later, till finally it is rising in the early morning hours. I'm not quite sure how I got to be 60 years old before I discovered this fact. I guess I never paid attention to it before.

I hope you enjoy sharing my view of the moon!

Full Moon on Cloudy Night

moon peaks through clouds

The second night was rather cloudy, but the moon still peaked through the clouds. It gave the sky an entirely different look.

Moon through the Clouds

moonlight slips behind clouds

I love the way the moon shines through the clouds. Since there was heavy cloud cover near the horizon, it was later before I could get any good photos.

Lunar Eclipse

Photos taken August 28, 2007

In August of 2007 there was a lunar eclipse. I set my alarm clock and at 4:15 am I went outside and set up my tripod and camera in our driveway and waited patiently. I was rewarded for my patience by the great views I got of the lunar eclipse. Starting at 4:43 am you can see the photographs that I captured.

By the light of the silvery moon,
I want to spoon, to my honey I'll croon love's tune.
Honeymoon, keep a-shining in June,
Your silvery beams, will bring love dreams,
We'll be cuddling soon,
By the silvery moon.

Fireworks under the Full Moon

moonlight and fireworks

This photo was taken on July 5, 2009. I was able to capture fireworks under the full moon. I didn't have my tripod handy so it's not quite as clear as I would like...but I still like the effect of the fireworks under the moon.
