REVIEW
I have seen boys and girls ages 2 to 8 captivated by Uncle Milton's "Moon in My Room." As an adult, frankly I think it's pretty cool too!
The moon model has a contoured, textured surface. It is a couple of inches thick, curved, so it has real depth. The moon cycles through 12 different phases. I have not seen any evidence of the light turning on automatically after dark, as advertised, but it works fine manually or by activating the automatic 5-seconds per phase cycle. The moon is lit up from a light within and the plastic does not glow in the dark when it is turned off.
The Moon in My Room is advertised as appropriate for ages 6 and up, but since it's mounted on the wall I don't see why it can't go in a toddler's room as long as the remote control is secured. I will echo a previous reviewer's comment that you need to keep track of the remote, as I don't think it would work otherwise. - Amy Tiemann

This is by far the best short treatment I've read on moon phases for kids. The illustrations and explanations are clear and understandable, and my five -year-old is able to "wrap his brain around" the idea of the moon rotating around the earth rotating around the sun...not the most intuitive concept around. In most other similar books I've looked at, they seem to assume you can already picture it in your head...this one adds the viewers' perspective in addition to the planet's. Very helpful. - Review by BL

As with all the Eyewitness books, Moon looks at various aspects of the moon from man's prehistoric wonderings to landing on the moon and studying samples of specimens taken from the moon's surface. The clear, precise photos invite children and adults of all ages to ponder, explore and increase their knowledge of our lunar neighbor.

The Moon in My Room remote control night light would be a wonderful addition to a classroom learning about the Solar System. Turn out the lights and run through the phases of the moon as you discuss the movements of the earth and it's planet in relation to the sun. In my classroom we created a planetarium in a refrigerator box where children could go inside where it was dark to use the Moon in My Room while listening to the accompanying CD.

- I'm not happy with Phases of the Moon by Olson as a suggested book. It's OK for introducing the idea of changing patterns, but also introduces a misconception: that the moon is somehow lit differently by the sun, rather than half the moon being lit all the time.
A book I highly recommend is Faces of the Moon by Bob Crelin, and Mr. Crelin's "Moon Gazers' Wheel." Check them out at www.bobcrelin.com.

- Evelyn, Michey sent me this lens knowing that I would find it interesting (which could be said for all your lenses). I very much enjoy, admire and appreciate your teaching passion and style which always appears fully researched with a presentation geared so that even a kid as old as me can understand. Great job on our fascinating moon which serves to impact us in so many ways.

- Teaching children about the moon phases may also let them be privey to how their own bodies respond to the phases of the moon... my husband says that I am more affected by the new moon than the full moon.

- What wonderful story books and moon-related products to teach children about the phases of the moon, or to just bring interest and excitement to a child's world about something they can actually see nearly any night!
