The premise of Space:1999
Space: 1999 is the story of the crew of Moonbase Alpha, a permanent manned outpost on Earth's Moon. An accident at a nuclear waste storage facility on the dark side of the moon caused a series of explosions that caused the Moon to accelerate and break away from the Earth, rocketing out of our Solar System into deep space.
The crew of Moonbase Alpha struggles to survive this deep space adventure while finding a new planet to settle upon.
The Eagle - the symbol of Space:1999
The Eagle Transport Ship helped create the look and feel of Space:1999.

Star Trek had shuttlecraft. Star Wars used a myriad of small vehicles, as did Babylon 5 and other science fiction TV shows. Space:1999 had the Eagle, a modular transport ship that did the business of getting people on and off Moonbase Alpha.
We saw a number of different kinds of Eagles during Space:1999's episodes, as the midsection could be swapped out and replaced with other modules.
