A Flower Garden to Enjoy by Moonlight

Recently we visited the Edison and Ford winter estates in Ft. Myers, Florida. It was fascinating to see the lifestyles of these famous men. As we strolled the grounds, I was particularly taken by a moonlight garden that Mrs. Edison created next to what they called The Little Office. This was in 1929. She commissioned one of the first female landscape architects, Ellen Biddle Shipman to design it.

The beautiful garden filled with blue and white flowers included a small reflecting pool to capture the moonlight. The garden was recently restored and won the Award of Merit from the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Lanscape Architects in 2006.

I think this type of garden would be very enjoyable in any backyard. Often people work and commute, arriving home after dark. They get little chance to enjoy the flowers in their yards, but a moonlight garden would invite them to relax among the flowers and the moonlight.

"This book is great - it has some neat poems sprinkled in which is an extra bonus. The book starts out with a chapter called "The Beauty ofthe Night" which talks to the moon, colors at night, stars/brightness. The next chapter is an overview of a niht garden - fragrances, pollinators, and plants. Then there is a chapter on orchids, another on bromelaids, another on annuals and perrenials for the night garden, night blooming daylillies, primroses and water gardens. Cactuses are also covered as well as trees and vines. There's also a chapter on fireflies, glow worms and moths. A very complete book - I'm really happy with it." (review by merrymousies on Amazon)

"Gardening books are usually pretty utilitarian affairs, but this one is a pure literary delight.
Loewer not only provides copious amounts of information, but he weaves an enchanting tale of the garden at night. As if that's not enough, he also provides intricate line drawings of many of the featured plants.
This gem has a permanent place on my nightstand. I like to reread favorite evocative passages -- I can practially smell the jasmine and hear the delicate flutter of moth wings." (review by Rebecca Hadley on Amazon)

Other plants I've seen suggested for a night garden are white hibiscus, white impatiens, white lily, star magnolia, star jasmine, hall's honeysuckle, variagated hosta, white clematis, shasta daisy, pale caladium, nicotiana, viburnum and white rock rose. For scent, you can plant mint that gives off a pleasant smell of peppermint when you brush past it.
