Information About Moose

For several years, I've been completely fascinated with moose. I was lucky enough to be able to see moose on my vacation to Alaska around a year ago. Seeing them in real life was so much different than learning about them in books and seeing photographs of them. They are amazingly majestic and such beautiful creatures. I've created this lens to share some basic facts about moose in hopes that you'll become as fascinated with them as I have.

Moose Information

Moose are closely related to deer and other split-hoofed mammals such as elk.

Life Span: 15-20 years in the wild
Height: 5 to 6.5 feet tall at the shoulders
Weight: 1,400 to 1,800 pounds

Moose Location

Location

Moose live in the northern united states in places such as Maine and Washington, as well as Canada, Alaska, northern Europe, and Northern Asia.

Moose Diet

Diet

In the winter, moose eat branches and plants they can find. In the summer, moose eat the shrubs, tall plants, and pond/lake plants. The moose will actually swim under water to eat the water plants, and can hold their breath for thirty seconds!

Moose Social Structure

Social Structure

Moose are mainly solitary and only get together to mate. When it is mating season, the male moose (called bulls) fight over females (called cows). Whoever wins gets to carry on their strong bloodline.

Moose Reproduction

Reproduction

Moose usually mate in the fall and have their baby or babies (moose often have twins, but rarely have triplets) in late spring/early summer. The moose has a gestation period of 230 days, and their babies stay with them one year.

Moose Fun Facts

Fun Facts

Despite their hefty size, moose can run at 35 miles per hour!

Moose's antlers can be 6' across and weigh 75 lbs.

Once a year, male moose's antlers are shed. Shortly after that, they grow back and the cycle continues.
