Mountains, lakes, wildlife and wildflowers make this little town and surrounding area well worth the time.  Slow down and watch bears play on avalanche snow, mountain goats defy gravity, eagles soar, or a swan parade.  Any given day, this is what you can see from here...

Small Town Big Scenery

Moose Pass is small town (pop. 200 give or take) on the Kenai Peninsula about 100 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska. It offers fishing, hiking, flightseeing, berry picking, & cycling for starters. Wildlife are abundant and include bears, moose, eagles, wolves, coyotes, mink, lynx, weasels, swans, loons, mountain goats and snow shoe hares. Lots of wildflowers such as lupine and geraniums are available for photographing.

Area Lakes include Tern Lake, Vogt Lake, Carter Lake, Summit Lake, Jerome Lake and Kenai Lake. Tern Lake affords some spectacular shots for photographing. Many Alaskan artists have also added this lake to their painting and photography selections. There is a turnout off the Seward Highway above the lake for a great view and shot. Off the Sterling Highway, a turnout and the day use area offer different angles to photograph.

Accomodations include a hotel, cabins, B&B's, and guest houses. There is a restaurant and general store. Infrastructure includes a post office, pay phone, volunteer fire dept. and volunteer library.

Each a Summer Solstice celebration is hosted by the Moose Pass Sportsman Club. Live music, grilled food, games for kids, bake sale, craft booths and a live auction. Proceeds benefit community projects such as the Volunteer Fire Dept, Volunteer Library and programs for the local elementary school and tot group.

Books on Alaska to Help Plan Your Trip

Start with the Milepost. It is the best book to help plan what to see and do in Alaska. The other books on fish, flowers, berries and birds fill in the details.

Bears, Moose, Loons & Swans Hang Out Here...

Granted you cannot always see wildlife here, however, you can almost always see something! There are lots of terns and ducks. From the observation deck on the back of the lake you can see spawning salmon in season. Last summer a bear delighted tourists as it went from nest to nest looking for food. The year before on the north side of the highway, a bear made lots of folks smile with his antics sliding on the avalanche snow. Sometimes, you can see mountain goats or dall sheep on the cliffs, any direction. The mountain goats are larger and shaggier than the sheep and look like dirty snow spots! It is a beautiful spot even if the wildlife are being shy.
