GIMP Guides

There are dozens of GIMP guides on the market. These are great for becoming familiar with the features of the software. Make sure you purchase the most current edition of any guide so that you have the most recent features included. If you have not yet aquired the GIMP software you can download it free at www.gimp.org

Steps To Creat Mosaic Designs

Photography:
Open your photo in GIMP.

GIMP Features:
Select 'Filters' and scroll down to 'distorts' in the drop down menu. Next, slide over and down to 'Mosaics'. The Mosaic Tool Window will pop up and you may adjust the settings. Adjustments are numerous, so for this example we will leave all settings on default. You can see a preview of what the image will look like after the transformation.

If you like it...click on 'OK' and wait for the program to transform your image into a mosaic.

The next step I took in making the flower and bee mosaic image, was to crop the photo around the best section of the image.

To do this, select the 'crop tool' from the GIMP Main dashboard. It looks like an exacto knife on the newest version. Double click on it so that the tool options box will pop up. Put a check (by clicking on it ) IN the box next to "Current layer only," this will assure that you only crop the top layer of the image (the background can be cropped later after one more step).

Now, draw (by dragging your mouse)a square around the part of the image you want to keep in the final cut. If you drop the square off a bit, you can move your mouse toward the edges of the square and a small image will appear that looks like a T. The top edge of the T (the long side), can be scooted to move your square into the position that you want it.

Once you have the square right where you want the cut, then push 'enter' on your keyboard.

Now you have your image transformed into a mosaic, and cropped to the size you want it.

Groups Using Banners made with GIMP

Group Banners Made with GIMP

How To Make A Banner with GIMP

Step by Step

Open GIMP

Click on 'File'

Select 'New'

Set image size to one of the following sizes:
Tip: You can create the larger size and then save it and resize for your smaller sizes. This way you will have the best quality images. Better to scale down than up (the image gets pixelated - thin and torn spots - when it is enlarged too much)

Banner Sizes:
Group Banner (for Squidoo) 725 x 125 px
Lense Banner (like the ones above) 449 x 78
