From the lens Guns Lower Crime.

Feel free to offer your thoughts about how more handguns in the hands of law abiding citizens = less crime! Or, maybe you don't agree?

Hi, very good lens! One correction...in Texas, if you are a valid CHL holder you are allowed to carry in church UNLESS the church has a 30.06 sign posted. I know of many congregation members who "pack in the pews".

If more guns = less crime then we should be able to look at societies that have low level of private ownership of guns and expect to find high levels of crime and conversely we should find societies with high levels of gun ownership enjoy low levels of crime. Quick trip cruising official country records doesn't show this to be the case with levels of crime not directly correlating with level of gun ownership.

That said there is clear precedent for gun ownership in the US and on a national level the issue of gun control has for the time being been resolved in favor of permissive rather than restrictive gun ownership rights. And don't take my commentary as a pro-regulatory stance, merely providing additional context and correction of some assumptions.

Truth be told, there is only one use for a gun and that is to kill. Perhaps that should taken into consideration when weighing the pros and cons

It's a deterrent and I'm inclined to agree with you. The only problem is that you have more unlimited access to guns and it becomes even easier for criminals to access guns or heaven forbid some crazed killer. Criminals will commit crime regardless, I doubt many do research into the homes they're robbing on whether they have or do not have firearms.

    This reminds me of some reports i've read before;
Free and unrestricted access to porn lowers incidents of rape.
Lower minimum ages for smoking and drinking alcohol reduce the likelyhood of heavy drinking and heavy smoking.
Allowing children to go out from a younger age, opposed to keeping them 'off the streets and out of harms way' reduces likelyhood of Avoidant personality disorder and other anxiety disorders.
  • Tolovaj Jan 6, 2012 @ 11:30 am | delete
I disagree. Like I said before: number of guns is not correlated with crime. We need better schools, not more guns and that stands for the whole world.

So glad we don't have guns in the UK. Gun crime is very low, and usually criminal on criminal, very rarely targeted at the general population, unlike US. If guns become commonplace in UK we will see a lot more random murders by the psychologically disturbed. I think Europeans on the whole have a very different mindset towards guns than Americans, thankfully.

A gun is the last defense that is used, only when your life is in danger. It's something no one knows you have, I can't stand seeing people walk around with holsters...someone could just walk up knock them over their head and take their gun, easily...hide your gun, don't show it off. Don't be the victim...Great Lens!!!Blessed...:)rob

Interesting discussion about this issue - that more guns equals less crime. Never was raised around guns and years ago I'd likely have disagreed, however I am now changing my thinking on this. Right now we can't rely on government to protect us in the US, and so folks should have the legal right to protect themselves, home & family.
  • MattKay Oct 9, 2011 @ 4:32 am | delete
I think you're not alone. More and more people are coming around to the realization that the forefathers of the US saw. Keep in mind that our second amendment wasn't only meant as a means for us to defend ourselves from a criminal element. It was also designed to limit the power of government. Without our guns a government has the power to take any other God given right too.

Here in Texas you CAN carry in Church IF they don't have a NO CARRY sign. 30.06 sign. I have family friends and mom's group moms that carry to mass and events almost every day of the week. I don't YET, but that is because I don't have a holster that would be comfortable enough for all of the Catholic kneeling and standing:)

Years ago, in TX, there was a man who took it upon himself to volunteer and stand outside a storefront on a street where stores were being robbed regularly. He had a rifle, which was legal to carry in the open. The robberies stopped, finally! He said he was protecting his community with his right to carry a gun in public.

Even after reading this, I still can't comprehend how more guns would equal less crime. A friend of mine almost got into a bar fight the other week and if the other guy was carrying a concealed gun, I wouldn't put it past him to have pulled it out in a threatening manor.
  • BrassFittings Sep 29, 2011 @ 4:43 pm | delete
IN A BAR? NO NO NO

You cannot carry in a bar.....People who spend the time and money needed to acquire a concealed carry permit don't do stupid things like breaking the terms of carry. It would strip them of their permit and ability to OWN a gun. Plus the jail time, and fine......

Criminals do stupid things like that...

    (EVEN OUTSIDE of a BAR)

nah that's VERY NOT LIKELY to happen with a CC weapon holder. You show you gun when you use it, NO other reason.

NOW if your friend picked a fight with someone and that person felt like they were in mortal danger.........don't pick fights would be that lesson.

I have had to tell 6 approaching youths asking for something or the other to stop moving toward me and speak from where they were. I made no mention of a gun or my ability's; just "please come no closer and say what you have to say."

A criminal would have continued to move forward and surround me while himming and hawwing.....at least a little bit more:)
  • MattKay Oct 9, 2011 @ 4:46 am | delete
You can't blame a guy for what you thought he might have done but didn't.
Let's suppose that the guy in question was carrying illegally though. If you outlaw guns, then he's still carrying illegally isn't he? But, the law took the gun away from me and others like me who would have protected you and your friend.

If you think that it's safer to NOT have guns then put a sign on your front door that says, "Attention Criminals: I oppose guns. I do not own them and I don't allow them in my house." If guns were outlawed would you feel any safer with the same sign on your door? As long as criminals know that guns are legal then they know that there is a possibility that one of their potential victims will be armed. It's a HUGE deterrent.

Now not everybody can think about shooting as a pass-time or hobby, because many Americans join the army sooner or later and will have to face real battles on the battlefield, and training shooting is of course a good way to prepare for these life-threatening moments. Certainly you can not really compare using an AK 47 Airsoft airgun with using a real one against actual humans, but it is better than nothing and the concept of aiming, shooting and concentrating is very similar, whatever you're shooting with.

Good talking point but there is no fact to back it up. Countries with low gun ownerships have lower crimes. There is also a correlation in the US where states with fewer gun owners have fewer gun deaths. Guns are used to commit crimes, less guns = less crime. All crime statistics point solidly in that direction. Guns for hunting and to feed your family is one thing but to carry a gun because you feel insecure, sorry. I just don't feel it doing any good.

According to a friend of mine who is a Tampa criminal defense lawyer, it is true that guns can prevent crime. It's just a matter of being responsible on how you carry your gun. A person needs to have the proper documents in order to carry firearms. Guns don't kill people but irresponsible people with guns kill people!

Plus most gang members carry guns and dispute the TV shows making it seem its difficult to get a direct hit, its pretty easy to shoot a person and the less guns the better, we need stricter laws.

We've been through an attempted home invasion- a gang carrying golf clubs in the middle of the night came looking for the previous tenants of a rental unit we'd recently moved into. Because the place was known to the police (unbeknown to us), they took 20 minutes to respond and by then the attackers had dispersed. Ever since then I have understood that given the opportunity I would keep a gun in the home. We do have other potentially protective items that could serve, in case, that are appropriately situated in the home.

I agree with this great lense. If you take away all the guns the only people with guns are the criminals. I grew up near Pearl Mississippi. The reason you have never heard of it is because the principle of the school neutralized the school's student shooter with his personal handgun before the student killed several other students. If this principle wasn't an avid marksmen Pearl would be synonymous with Columbine. But since this principle saved countless lives people have never heard of it. (Feel free to Goggle this story. It is true if visitors of this lense don't find this true) Guns in the right hands do many positive things that go unreported. Many times it is only the bad news that makes the news.

A country can be very peaceful and law-abiding without guns. Imagine a scenario where all the citizens are educated, no employment issues, no-crimes and every-one is wealthy. The people in this ideal place are spiritual , artistic and engrossed in their professions minus stress and worries. Crime rate = Big 0 . Where is the need of arms, ammunition and guns?
  • AmericanDreamer Nov 9, 2010 @ 4:17 pm | delete
Unfortunately...that is altogether an impossibility. Utopia does not exist in this lifetime, at least not for very long. Plenty of people have tried it, but all have failed. Note that most of those people were socialist or communist in nature, because that is the only way that the idea of socialism works, is under the supposition that mankind is somehow perfectable by man itself.

The reason that this will never happen is indeviduality. People's inherant differences create conflict. You find somthing that makes another person different from you, in creed or character or even body, then you will forever be at odds with that person, even if that person is your closest friend, as your two differing points of view compete for dominance.

This is usually done in a non-violent, even friendly way, debate or even good natured joshing, because we place a much greater value on the things which unite us then those that devide us. However somtimes those deviations begin to compound, one on top of the other, until what was once a ripple is now a full on tear. This leads to hatred and disgust on behalf of one person for another. Sometimes this turns violent, and that is where crime, violent crime, stems from. The larger a society is, the faster this occurs.

Chaos begits chaos, and somtimes these differences in people can be caused by the most unguilty of things. A baby dies as it is born and it's mother feels alone in her grief because no one else can possibly empathise with her pain. A single house on a street burns down and the owner now feels seperate from their neighbors, an outsider in some way, perhaps with a feeling of discontent or even rage that everyone around them was spared a pain which they had to endure. A person has to watch a member of their family die in a hospital after having punctured a lung while falling off of the roof, and even this person knows that nothing could have been done on a conscious level, they still feel a pulse of hatred towards the doctors grip at them, which soon grows to hatred for the medical community as a whole and then eventually all of society.

My point is that, no matter how perfect your world is, crime will never be at the "Big 0" because there will always be unpredictabiliy and chaos, and that, combined with human ideviduality, will always compound into violence, at least for some people. There will always be a human variable, which can never be accounted for. Most of the time this is a good thing, as it leads to innovation, creation, and growth. But with the good must also come the bad, and creation and evolution are a distructive force in nature. A positive destructive force, but a destructive force none-the-less.

Even if your utopia were possible, I wouldn't want to live in it. Such a world of ease and lack of conflict would make people dull-minded, stupid, weak, and naive. People arn't meant to live that way. We are meant to grow through adversity. We are meant to climb the mountains in order to reach better lands. In your hypothetical, there would be no purpose, because a good life would be promised to you no matter what. In such a world, good would not exist, because evil would not exist. There would be no such thing as happyness because stress and worry and strife would not be there in which to differentiate it from.

If everyone is well-educated, then there is no point in pushing yourself to your greatest potential because adequacy will always be there and you never have to worry about falling beneath that line. If everyone is employed, then there is no sense of acomplishment that comes with holding a job. If everyone is wealthy, then wealth itself has no value, as it is commonplace.

I personally would rather take the long and bumpy road to excellence and emerge with all the bumps and bruises that come with it, but also with the knowledge that I was capable of reaching the top of the mountain. Because success is it's own reward, because I am strong and I capable and I know that I can succeed, and because when it comes right down to it, the meaning of life is to live it, with all the ups and all the downs along the way.

To quote a character from Disney/Pixar's WALL-E, "I don't want to exist, I want to live!"

?The right of a citizen to bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the State government. Well written! I keep getting this dropdown in my dashboard that says to nominate a lens for LotD. I just used it on this lens. Best of luck. Congratulations on the purple star.

    Hi GrowWear:

Thanks for the kind words about my purple star. I totally respect your opinion that not all responsible citizens want to own guns and I'm totally cool with that. Not everyone wants to own a car, or hunt, or fish or whatever. That's what makes the USA such a great place - if someone is fortunate enough to live here. ;-)

Great expansive lens on the benefits of and reasons for concealed carry. Here in Arizona, open carry is legal, and frankly, I think folks should have them on their hip. It says: "I'm carrying, bother someone else, and/or bother me at your own risk." but of course, concealed carry makes crooks wonder if you're packing or not, and since they're dumb and opportunistic, they won't think about whether you're packing. Still, that doesn't change the fact that folks should own, train and carry.

Everyone should at least take classes, understand the function of guns, and their proper maintenance and use, and then consider buying and training with the right gun for them. If they do, then they should take proper gun defense courses including use of force and train regularly.

    Keep up the good work.
  • pyle_mountain Sep 23, 2010 @ 10:28 am | delete
I agree with you, JHFSEO. With the proper training for weapon retention, etc. and background checks, I believe open carry is great. I do like the gun laws out in Arizona. I'm not sure about your background checks, though. Has the law been changed recently out there? I was thinking you don't need a license there, but what about background checks?

I liked your lens and agree with pretty much everything in it. I've had guns for 24 years and plan to keep owning them too. Hopefully this lens will wake some people up.

I just love this lens. Being a mom of three little girls and having a husband who is away a lot, I knew I had to have a gun. I got my carry permit earlier this year and bought a Taurus 38 Special and I love it. I am one of the most unsuspecting people to have a gun but that is why I need it. I am very petite and would make a good target to criminals. I think I am being proactive for my family. More people should take control of their own safety. The police are great but they should be a back up, not a primary source of protection. If people learn how to safely use a firearm and know their state laws, then I have no problem with everyone carrying a gun. I just wish someone would come out with the perfect women's holster. They are all too obvious on me. I either have to put it in my purse (ugh) or carry on my ankle...not real great during the summer. :)
  • pyle_mountain Sep 10, 2010 @ 11:42 am | delete
Hi J_barnhart4: I really appreciate you sharing this story and I love to hear thoughts like this - especially from women. My observation has been that far too many women are afraid of guns (or just don't understand them) - leaving themselves vulnerable to crimes. I truly wish more people would embrace your thinking and let go of their fears and irrational thinking. I always cringe when I see the commercial where the lady runs to the phone when a man is breaking into her house. I love a good alarm system, but I'm thinking those ladies should get their gun first, then answer the phone.

Increadible lens which states the most common-sense concept out there in a way which makes it impossible for people who don't think things all the way through to argue against unless they simply don't read it all.

Here is another interesting statistic for you (and please note that I am recalling this from MEMORY so it might be slightly off) pointed towards all those people who try to point fingers at America's so called "high" crime rates (which in and of itself is a misleading statement).

Did you know that about 25% of all violent crimes in America occur in only four cities? Care to guess which ones? Detroit, Washington D.C., New York City, and New Orleans. What do they all have in common? They all have INCREADIBLY strict gun laws. I believe that guns are either totally or mostly illegal in all four. Something tells me you won't hear that on MSNBC.

Include Chicago, LA, San Fransisco, ect. all other cities in America famous for their high crime rate, and all with very strict gun laws, and I'd be willing to bet that the percentage would go up quite a bit. Fascinating, no? I defy anyone to find a city in America with very light or no gun laws which have ultra-high violent crime rates.

The anti-second amendment people just don't understand basic reason and logic.
  • AmericanDreamer Jul 23, 2010 @ 2:05 pm | delete
Oh, and in case anyone want's to check that statistic, I believe that it was in either Larry Elder's book *The Ten Things You Can't Say in America* or his documentary *Micheal and Me* (I can't remember which, but I am almost certain it came from him).
  • pyle_mountain Sep 10, 2010 @ 11:37 am | delete
Hi AmericanDreamer: I wanted to thank you for all the great comments, and intellectual (fact driven) posts to this lens. Far too often it seems people are so emotional about guns and it clouds their mind - preventing them from seeing truths that to you and I are obvious. Thanks again, pyle_mountain (aka Ed).
  • AmericanDreamer Sep 15, 2010 @ 2:52 pm | delete
You're quite welcome Ed :) I just believe in making sure that the good guys are the ones who are more powerful then the bad. A gun can make all the difference for one person to defend themselves against a group of gangsters, a small woman to defend herself against a strong male rapist, or an old man to defend himself against a young criminal.

I love your lens, and would even go so far as to say that it is my favorite one on Squidoo. The only thing that dissapoints me is that you forgot my personal favorite manufacturer on your poll ;D I personally have always prefered Colt for my handgun of choice.

Anyways, great lens. I think that if good, moral people were better prepared to defend themselves, the world would be a much better and much safer place. I'm not the best shot in the world, but I can shoot a golf ball from 20-30 yards away with an air gun and I'm darn proud of it because it means that I know that I am capable of protecting my home and family if ever it came to that.

God made man, Colt made them equal. ;)
  • pyle_mountain Sep 15, 2010 @ 4:06 pm | delete
Oh, wow, how could I forget Colt?? I didn't leave them off on purpose, that's for sure. I don't receive many requests for holsters to fit Colts so they're not on my mind as much. But I did go back and try to add Colt into the poll, but the only problem is the system wouldn't allow me to place them with the other gun choices. Colt would be the bottom choice, below "other" and the last choice. What do you think? Should I add Colt below the last choice in the poll? I was thinking that might make the poll look weird and Colt owners might not even glance that far down....

Shooting a golf ball at 20 to 30 yards is certainly very good shooting for anyone. I can do it with a sighted rifle, but don't think I can with a handgun. Shooting a golf ball that far (75 feet or so) with a handgun is impressive. I might be able to do is with my Glock 21, but it would be 1 out of ___ number of shots. :)

Back to Colt again, I do like Colt handguns. After all, they got the awesome 1911 started and it seems that every gun manufacturer out there today has some sort of 1911 clone. Although I don't own one (yet), the Colt Python is my 2nd favorite revolver - 2nd only to my S&W Model 629 with an 8 3/8" barrel.

Anyway, thanks again for the kind words and all the support!

    Sincerely,

    Ed
  • AmericanDreamer Sep 16, 2010 @ 2:42 pm | delete
Yeah, my Grandpa, the guy who taught me how to shoot, owns a Colt Diamondback Revolver which he has slightly customized, a variation of the Python, and it is my personal favorite. I've always prefered revolvers myself, just because they fit better in my hand. Never used the S&W Model 629 but I hear it's an excellent gun.

I hate to say that it would probably be unnesicarrily cumbersome to add Colt to the poll at this point. Besides looking odd, a whole bunch of people have already voted, some maybe for the "other" choice because they prefer Colt as well, and to add on another choice now would leave you with skewed results. Oh well, I voted for "other" for that reason :) I considered S&W or Kimber, as they are my favorites that you listed, but I decided that wouldn't be totally truthful.

Maybe I just have an affinity for the old west, since I also really like the old Winchester lever action rifles a whole lot. I know that I always prefer to use American whenever possible. Sig, Glock, and Beretta are fine guns, but I do have my patriotic loyalty to consider.

The problem is not with Guns. THe problem is when Guns reach bad people. A bad person knows that most of the good people at the crime scene wont be able to do anything.

    Hi,

  • pyle_mountain Jul 13, 2010 @ 4:45 pm | delete
Absolutely! It's not the gun, it's the person using a gun.
  • RuneGard May 23, 2010 @ 7:03 am | delete
Amazing! Very sad. In the early 1970's I thought by the time I reached my fifties the world would be a kinder/gentler place. When we enter into debates about weapons our speech automatically shifts to violence and "us" against "them". This was true about apartheid South Africa where every white man and many times "their" women felt it an aboslute to arm themselve to the teeth against the very people they disenfranchised. The gun in this country also has a negative history. First used to shoot out and obliterate its indegenous populous, and then ironically, turned on one another. As for Nugent, he clearly isn't pro-life. Pro-Life begins with the fork, not dessimating what remains of wildlife and excusing the behavior as being self sufficient. It's 2010, time to start thinking more progressively, rather than primitively.
  • mickey54 Jun 23, 2010 @ 7:44 pm | delete
Do you really think before you comment, or does stuff just kinda float out of your keyboard?
  • christoformia Jul 13, 2010 @ 2:35 pm | delete
I think stuff just floats from his keyboard. And I believe he has his definitions of primitive and progressive -- in the true sense of progress -- confused.
  • pyle_mountain Jul 13, 2010 @ 4:41 pm | delete
    Hi RuneGard:

Thanks for stopping by. You're right about one thing: "Very sad." But it's sad that places like Chicago (where guns were banned) only became more dangerous - as law-abiding citizens were helpless to defend themselves. I'm not sure how anyone could call that "progress". True "progressives" in the USA are in favor of more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens and less guns in the hands of criminals.
  • paintballgunsandgear May 21, 2010 @ 2:20 am | delete
I am more into paintball guns but I feel that law abiding citizens do have the right to bear arms.
As for the more guns = less crime equation. I really don't see the connection unless crimes in progress are being stopped by citizens with guns. Therefore taking the criminals off the street by either holding them at gunpoint until the police arrive or blowing their a** away. If this is the case then the impact on crime is going to be minimal and will only prevent future crimes from these perpetrators.
One thing that I do believe is that a total ban of guns in the hands of citizens (like some lawmakers would like) would = much more crime.
I think the saying goes "if owning a gun is a crime, then only criminals will own guns." But I guess that is a topic for another debate.
Anyway, I am new to squidoo and really enjoyed your lens. I look forward to reading your others but just had to comment on this one. Keep up the good work. 5 stars in my book.
    BTW.....loved the Ted Nugent video!
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 8:12 am | delete
Hi paintballgunsandgear: The biggest point I'm trying to make is that carrying guns lowers crime because guns are a deterrent to crime. It's just the way the world works. Criminals that are capable of committing violent crimes aren't much above wild animals in my opinion. If you look to the animal kingdom, we see that animals attack the weak and respect strength - same thing with criminals. Would a rapist prefer to attack an unarmed woman or an armed woman? If a criminal believes a person is armed, don't you believe the criminal is less likely to carry out a crime against the armed person? I do.

Great lens. After years of constant nagging by my husband, I finally decided to learn how to safely handle and shoot a gun. One trip to the range and I was shocked. A week later, a was applying for my carry permit and buying a revolver. I think that most opposition over guns is a fear...fear of the unknown. Most people don't know how to use them safely and aren't properly trained. It is our right, and our duty, to learn how to defend ourselves and our family. Great job on this. Blessed :)
  • pyle_mountain Jul 13, 2010 @ 4:31 pm | delete
    Hi j_barnhart4:

Thanks for stopping by. I love your story and totally agree with you about fear. So many of the anti-gun folks I meet are simply afraid of guns. I believe they've been "taught" to be afraid, so they demonize guns. It's ironic, really, that people have blamed guns to the extent that true causes of crime have not been addressed. In that sense, gun control, is an easy scapegoat for politicians like Daley (in Chicago). Since they don't really want take on the true causes of crime, blame guns! Crazy....

As I've read your lens my thoughts go to something I just read regarding guns and freedom. I think quoting from the article written by a woman who lived in Austria when Hitler took over is the best thing to do. So as you read this quote the question should be, "Will more guns = more freedom?
"America Truly is the Greatest Country in the World. Don't Let Freedom Slip Away
    By: Kitty Werthmann
What I am about to tell you is something you've probably never heard or will ever read in history books.
I believe that I am an eyewitness to history. I cannot tell you that Hitler took Austria by tanks and guns; it would distort history. We elected him by a landslide ? 98% of the vote. I've never read that in any American publications. Everyone thinks that Hitler just rolled in with his tanks and took Austria by force....
The Final Steps - Gun Laws:
Next came gun registration. People were getting injured by guns. Hitler said that the real way to catch criminals (we still had a few) was by matching serial numbers on guns. Most citizens were law abiding and dutifully marched to the police station to register their firearms. Not long after-wards, the police said that it was best for everyone to turn in their guns. The authorities already knew who had them, so it was futile not to comply voluntarily. The NRA keeps fighting for us, but we fools don't give them much support. "

I have owned firearms since I was an 8-year old boy during WW2, and am, and have always been, a believer in the right to possess and bear arms. I am now 74 years old and have never shot at any person in peacetime. Having lived in the UK for fifty years and had to tolerate its politically-motivated strict anti-gun laws, I moved to France and then Spain where I was able to legally own my revolver and compete with it in target shooting. Many of my neighbours here in Madrid own arms, and we have never had any trouble.
Gun control laws work badly. Gun ownership simply requires self-discipline and the ability to keep one's temper and think before acting. It is better to carry your pistol 2,000 times and never have to use it, than to need to use it once and not have it.
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 8:35 am | delete

This reminds me of the bumper sticker that guns do not kill people, people kill people. I live in an area where lots of people have conceal carry permits and this is well known. I rarely hear about crime in my area because criminals do not want to approach those who are carrying guns to commit their crimes.
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 8:36 am | delete
Exactly right, mitchking. Criminals want easy targets, not targets that can defend themselves.
  • Beautiful_GreenBeans Sep 16, 2009 @ 8:10 pm | delete
You've presented an exhaustive exploration of this debate, and accomplished such without taking yourself too seriously: kudos!
I'd love to see the guns vs. underwear statistics, those wedgies can be deadly!

Guns, in general, are weapons designed to hurt, maim and kill. Be it for protection or aggression, this speaks to the operator. Unlike many deadly vices and devices that are accessible, at least they're honest and upfront about their function.

I definitely agree that criminals need more guns in the world to fear. Maybe one day we will evolve past all the primal evils that are the main cause of crime, but right now we must deter thugs with firepower.

Some kids don't get whipped enough like in the old days, so when they grow up to be criminals, they need to catch up on all that lesson teaching fear looking down the barrel of a gun.
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 8:38 am | delete
Hi gabrielangel: Well said, if there were no crime, there would be no need to protect ourselves.
  • billionare Aug 28, 2009 @ 5:21 am | delete
Nice lens but my opinion for this is more guns can't have less crime...I think it will add more because many will have a guns and need more discipline.

  • theboyjlowe Aug 16, 2009 @ 7:17 pm | delete
I could not agree more. People cannot figure out that guns don't kill people. People kill people. If you take guns away then you are giving the criminals more options.
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 8:41 am | delete
Hi theboyjlow: I just don't understand why more people don't see this issue the way you see it.

AWESOME LENS! I didn't find it too long. Or maybe you could divide it into 2 or 3 more, all linked together - with 1 on the 'crimes against women' angle and another on legislative action (or divide the material some other way).

Can you tell I love this lens? I think of the right to carry a concealed weapon kind of like a one armed bandit. Would you pull the lever if you felt there was a chance you would be shot? LOL

I firmly believe even the craziest of the lot wouldn't take a chance at marching in anywhere with an intention to shoot anyone if they felt a handgun could be concealed under anyone's blazer
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 8:43 am | delete
    Thanks Sparke!
  • Sparke Aug 12, 2009 @ 9:40 pm | delete
Another point on the incident at Columbine High as well as any school shooting is that criminals and seriously disturbed people do UNDERSTAND that schools are GUN FREE ZONES. If they weren't and all teachers were are all armed with guns, a criminal would never walk into a school to begin with, with any belief they could get away with firing a gun to injure anyone. On the contrary, in this scenario this would be an entry in a Dummies 101 handbook, of the first place to NOT to go with a gun. LOL So the solution that would likely completely END school shootings is for all teachers to carry concealed hand guns. ;-)
  • Sparke Aug 12, 2009 @ 9:21 pm | delete
Great Lens! I agree. It is our responsibility and Constitutional Right to defend and protect ourselves. Laws that restrict basic human Rights will NEVER make or keep us safe. I noticed the reference in a comment to Columbine High. My cousin was in attendance at this school on this fateful day. The famous image of the young man hanging from the window of that school was her best friend. Needless to say she was very traumatized by the incident. If every teacher and parent of a student had a gun at Columbine High on that fateful day it is likely the incident would have been very different and over in a flash with the only fatality being to the shooter that walked into that school on that day.
  • Sparke Aug 12, 2009 @ 9:10 pm | delete
Love this Lens!! I noticed the comment on the lens regarding Columbine High. It seems the point was missed that it was the criminal(s) that had possession of guns on this day not law abiding citizens which is the problem. My cousin was in attendance at this school on this horrific and fateful day. The famous image of the young man hanging from the window of the school was one of her best friends. Needless to say my cousin was very traumatized by the incident. I agree firmly with the positions on this lens that gun control should be stopped and our second amendment right should be restored. It is indeed our responsibility and Constitutional Right to protect and defend ourselves. On the contrary laws that restrict our rights such as gun control will NEVER make us safe. If every teacher and parent of a child at Columbine High had a gun on that fateful day it is likely it would have been over in a flash with the only fatality on that day to the shooter that walked into the school

I really like how you pointed out the fact that they don't blame the car when a drunk driver kills someone...they blame the drunk driver. When a criminal shoots someone, why blame the gun? It's such an obvious concept to me that so many people can't seem to grasp. Thanks for a great lens.
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 8:51 am | delete
Hi Ryan_McClullen: It's so true! People go out of their way to blame guns, but never blame cars, water (drowning), hands, etc. that kills people! Such hypocritical, opportunistic anti-gun thinking is nuts!

Glad to see this lens has been Angel blessed - definitely deserves it! I agree with Heather 326, barring mental illness or past criminal records, anyone should be able to own a gun with a simple safety test. Cars kill way more people than guns do, and any 16yo can drive a car!

great debate topic! Our second amendment rights should trump anyway...the only thing is that I think a person should have to qualify for gun ownership, by passing a safety test and be a sane individual, and not have a criminal record. But criminals will get them no matter what. Utopia does not exist in this world and criminals love unarmed victims.

Guns seem to be the new tool of evolution. There are so many stupid people in the world and not enough predators to eat them.

Now these people get taken out when they try to commit crimes against the wrong people. Conversely, stupid people with guns end up shooting themselves, eventually. Just ask Plaxico Burress about that one (P.S. I am a Giant's fan, but damn he was dumb to do that).

Good Lens - shame I can't agree with the opinion!

Despite statistics and NRA blurb - it's a fact that countries with fewer gun crimes have greater gun control, with notable exceptions for responsible citizens, of which the US is sadly lacking. With the largest proportion of citizens in prison in any 1st world nation - surely it's time to look at the causes of crime and not just apply a bandaid of giving every one a gun, so that only the bad guys die.
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 2:01 pm | delete
Hi The_Daz: Thanks for your thoughts, they're much respected, even though I can't agree with them. I'm all for solving the problem of crime. But I don't see why law-abiding citizens need to continue to be helpless sheep while social scientists debate the causes of crime. Why can't we have both? Also, we must be cautious with statistics and comparing different countries as that tends to create in an inaccurate view of the truth.

You reap what you sew... invest in education, you get smarter... invest in guns, you get violence... why not put all this energy into educating and empowering young people instead of the weapons industry?
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 2:06 pm | delete
Hi chadsteele: Thanks for your thoughts. You're correct, you do reap what you sew. But you don't understand what it means to carry a gun. It means investing in personal safety. You invest in personal safety - you'll be more safe. Now we just need to scale that so everyone (except the criminals) will be more safe.
  • ideadesigns Sep 4, 2008 @ 9:56 am | delete

Hi ideadesigns: Oh yes, the UN want's all guns destroyed - except the guns that those in power have. That's why we see such hypocrisy at high levels. That's why people like Diane Feinstein (sp) and Sylvester Stallone speak out against guns, but carry them personally.

I was walking my daughter to the store the other day and there is a gun shop along the way. In the window was a poster of kill shots for an assailant. It was unique, but I thought it was beneficial. I don't live in the crime capital of the world, but my street isn't that safe either. We have wannabe thugs all over the place and they will do what they have to do to prove themselves. If every law abiding citizen had a gun and trained with it to be able to hit the target, these wannabe thugs wouldn't get away with everything they try. I truly believe that. There really is no arguing that arguments for gun control are coming from individuals who have little clue with the entire issue. They enable the criminal and blame the law abiding citizen while literally standing in shock when someone says that guns carried by law abiding citizens will make the streets safer. They don't trust law abiding citizens as a reflection of a lack of trust in themselves.

Great point of views. Working for the Sheriffs Office I would have to say that...'Violence is not the answer" however, I do believe that it's a good idea. Some counties, including several in Georgia will actually FINE you if you don't have a gun. With strict laws that actually REQUIRE you to carry a gun, the crime rate is lower. People know that you have a gun and that...duh you will use it, helps to make them think twice. I think all senior citizens should have to carry a gun. LOL. It would keep gangster from robbing them.....The new law which we call the "Castle law" is a great concept. It means that if some dumbass comes in my house in the middle of the night or even prowling around my yard and can shoot him with out thinking twice about it. As bad as the world is getting it's gonna be 'kill or be killed' before long.

While I don't agree with all of the laws some should be more strict. Carrying a gun for protection, and not abusing the right. Could be the best option!

I agree with Griever on the point "It's not in our guns it's in our culture".

When you bring out your opinion "Want Less Crime? Add More Guns!" I believe you are limitting the usage of guns within "protection", but not all people with guns will think so, guns can also be the tool for attacking.

There're many ways for protection. First of all, the root solution would be planting peace in people's mind, providing good living condition over the country that people can afford their living easier. The more people enjoy their life naturally, the less crime. Government, social media, educational institute, industries have the responsibilities to create nice and peaceful environment. That's the culture.

I also notice you mentioned the biometric safe on your my nightstand. I read some news about biometrics
relating to biometric safes, biometric access control, seems very good solution for home protection.

    Hi rose08:

Don't you believe it would be good to do both? Promote safety and peace? Arming law-abiding citizens promotes safety for those people and deters criminals from committing those bad crimes.

    To Couch-Covers-Melanie:

Thanks for stopping by. In general, I would NOT suggest that you ARM teenagers with any type of "weapons" - however, I haven't quite decided if the cutoff age should be 18 or 21. Before that age, people have yet to develop enough "character" and "track record" to determine if they can responsibly carry any type of item for self-defense.

What I do find AMUSING is that politicians immediately seek to BLAME and OUTLAW knives, guns, etc. - suggesting THAT will have ANY effect on the crime problem. Using knives as an example, how many of those UK teenagers do you believe could pick up a kitchen knife at home? The point is that politicians need to quit using items (guns, knives, rocks, cars, etc.) as a scapegoat for criminal behavior. In addition, outlawing guns, knives, etc. has little effect at keeping those items out of the hands of those desiring to cause harm with them. For example, where I live you must be 18 years old to buy and smoke cigarettes.

This is all alien to us folks in the UK. Basically we are not allowed to have any form of weapon for defence. We have had many instances where people have used say shotguns to defend themselves against potential violent criminals breaking into their property and have been sent to jail and sued by the criminal for damages (if they survive). Also had a bit of a culture shock when on holiday in Tampa. I was looking around a store and came across a gun department. I was amazed - just doesn't happen in the UK. I don't think many people in the UK have even handled a gun, let alone fire one off. I personally have had the experience of shotgun, SLR and an old 303 bolt action when I was in the army cadets. Amazing experience - but to point and shoot someone - I'm not sure I could. But if my wife and son where is grave danger, I wouldn't give it a second thought - Bang! you're dead man and my family is safe.
    Anyway, great Lens.

Again, Bravo for an excellent lens that makes the point. If you play the part of the "victim", the crooks and outlaws will easily "prey" on you. If you play from a position of responsibility and knowledge (and, the possible possession of the ability to fight back with convincing power --whatever it takes), you are less likely to be a "victim". Whether it's a battle of wits or a battle of brute force, more is better. Thanks again for a good "thought-piece" and "wake-up call".

    Great message.

Most liberals and or anti-gun rights people, just won't face the facts put out by the FBI'S Uniform Crime Code showing as I recall that over 2 million crimes are prevented from those who legally own guns.
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 6:28 pm | delete
Facts are hard to face when they don't line up with a skewed world view, McMick, you are correct!

Very good lens, 5 stars. Even after reading this there are some still stuck on brainwashing. That is what is really wrong with this world, peoples inability to see reality when it is right in front them.

If we were all at a higher level no guns would be needed, but unfortunately there are people walking around at lower levels.

That's the way I see it as well, futurmajic!

Gun control is when you use both hands.

I tell ya I'd just love to pop off this annoying little dog that always bugs me when I jog in the morning. I'd have to pick a different running route afterwards cause the dog's owners would be looking to pop me off. Life kinda sucks that way.

It would be so cool if everyone carried around their own gun like in the westerns where fast reflexes and nerves of steel ruled the day. If someone insults you, you just take it out onto the street... People would be very polite with each other because they know the other is packing a gun. Hey, mutually assured destruction works. The cold war is proof out that!

So what side of the gun control issue do you think I'm on? Damn, I love this monkeybrain thing. This is fun!

Nice lens and am a firm believer in owning firearms and gun safety/responsibility taught to all. Criminals will find guns anyways so not being able to own a firearm/handgun puts you at a major disadvantage if you or your family are put at risk.

  • Grasshoppa May 5, 2008 @ 10:48 pm | delete
Police are not the first respondents to violent crime. The victims themselves are the first. Any bystanders are the second. It is ridiculous to arm the people who won't even get there in time to stop the violence, and yet refuse to arm the people who must first respond and therefore have the first opportunity to stop it. Who would you rather have shot -- a couple of perpetrators, or a campus full of unarmed students? It's time to stop treating the guns and gun owners like criminals and start treating the violent perpetrators like criminals.
  • pyle_mountain Sep 14, 2010 @ 6:36 pm | delete
    You are so right, Grasshoppa!
