How to Make More Money

The Ultimate Debt Trap

Hello and welcome. This lens discusses the very important issue of debt and offers some resources and information to help you increase your income as opposed to decreasing your expenses which is impossible in some situations.

Living within your means is obvious. I think most young folks today would appreciate it if the older generations would stop telling them over and over again to live within their means. Much of the debt of today is not from living beyond one's means. Instead, it has to do with rising costs of student loans, mortgages, services, gas, electricity, soaring interest rates, food costs, car repair, and medical bills. The average income is not keeping up with inflation.

To make matters worse, when someone files bankruptcy whether they did it to get out from medical bills or credit card debt, they now find out that they can't get a job. Ever since all companies were allowed to do credit checks on people applying for a job, people are staying in debt long after bankruptcy. This is a problem that needs addressing.

This lens tackles the solutions. Making more money is the key to getting out of and staying out of debt. Lowering your expenses is great, but if you're already up to your ears in student loan or medical debt, then it's time to increase your income. The stress of working 2 or more jobs to make ends meet is nothing new. There are resources to help you get over this hurdle. Put them to good use if you must.

And just my own personal feeling on this, businesses looking to hire someone should not be allowed to do a credit check on that person. Period. A background check - yes. A credit check - no. I don't care if they're applying for a job at a credit reporting agency or a retail store. A credit check is unacceptable and unnecessary. There I said it. Same goes for opening a checking or savings account at your local bank. Unacceptable to deny someone a way to pay bills and save money because their credit score is low.

Perhaps taking a chance at putting every cent you make into your own business really is less risky these days then trying to work for someone else and do things the "traditional way" or the way your parents and school taught you (ie. get a job, put your money in the bank and leave it there).
