Transformers: More than Meets the Eye

The Transformers have burst back onto the scene with their recent move released on July 3, 2007. The opening weekend grossed over $70 million and as of August 1, the movie has grossed over $538 million worldwide. It is quite obvious that fans, both old and new, are happy to have this new movie added to the Transformers universe.

Let's be honest here, I thought the movie was really good! Like seeing a friend you haven't for years, or having a certain smell remind you of a vivid memory, I found myself being taken back to my childhood in the 80's by the sites and sounds. Both of my older brothers were into the Transformers, and I followed as suit. Watching the movie felt like I was in a much cooler 1985.

The action was intense. I'll admit, it was a bit hard to follow at times, but that only makes me want to watch it again. The acting was good, and even very humorous at times - not something I was expecting.

If you haven't seen it yet, get out there and enjoy it. You'll be happy if you do!

Transformers are fictional alien robots and the main characters of a popular Hasbro toy line and its spin-offs. Haling from the planet Cybertron, they are divided into the heroic Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, and the evil Decepticons, led by Megatron. They are able to "transform" by rearranging their bodies into a common and innocuous form, such as a car, aircraft, or animal, which is reflected by the taglines "More Than Meets the Eye" and "Robots in Disguise". Furthermore, they can displace mass, combine or apply synthetic flesh.

All incarnations of Transformers have been based around this core concept since their debut in 1984 in various media. The largest continuity, is retroactively known as Transformers: Generation 1. This is an umbrella term for both continuities of the TV series and Marvel comic, which further divided into Japanese and UK spin-offs respectively. Sequels followed, such as the Generation 2 comic book and Beast Wars TV series which became its own mini-universe. Generation 1 characters underwent two reboots with Dreamwave in 2002 and IDW Publishing in 2006. There have been other incarnations of the story based on different toy lines during the 2000s. The first was the Robots in Disguise series, followed by Armada/Energon and Cybertron. A live-action film was also released on July 3, 2007, again distinct from previous incarnations.
