Morgan Spurlock: The Man Who Answers "What If?"

Ranked #13,652 in Culture & Society, #275,088 overall

Letting People Experience the "What If?" Is Morgan Spurlock's Genius

Morgan Spurlock has lived many lives for 30 Days at a time.  He has lived on minimum wage, he has eaten only McDonald's, he has worked in a coal mine and been in prison.

Good writing teachers will tell their students two things.

1.  Don't tell; show

2.  Always ask "What if?"

People learn more when the see something happen, or experience it than when they are just told about it. And the best way to be creative is to ask all sorts of "What If's" He started with the question, "What If? someone lived on nothing but McDonald's?  and has graduated to "What if a common man went searching for Osama bin Laden?"  What would he discover that the government hasn't.

And Morgan Spurlock puts his body and his time where his mouth is.  Although his show had a gay man living with evangelicals, a Baptist living in a Muslim family and a hunter in a vegan household, when there is danger Spurlock does it himself.  He went to prison and worked in a coal mine.

Years ago George Plimpton went undercover as a Pro quarterback so that the common man could experience what that was like.  Today Morgan Spurlock does lots of different things to teach us about each other.

Morgan Spurlock Takes On McDonald's

Morgan Spurlock first hit the scene when he showed us that McDonald's not only has no real nutrition, but in fact has minus nutrients. He risked his own health to save ours.

For 30 days he ate nothing but McDonald's for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Although he started out in tip top health, within days the lack of real food began to show and within a couple of weeks the changes were so dramatic that his doctors were begging him to quit.

High school kids hate him. They love their Micky D's and think he's a jerk. Others think that he went overboard, afterall no one eats McDonald's all the time.

But his point is that it isn't food. If McDonald's was something that nurtured the body, the deterioration that happened in this 30 days would not have happened. He might have had digestive problems, gas or something; he might have put on a few pounds. But even Spurlock did not expect what happened.

See the movie; read the book. Then, when you eat at McDonald's (or Burger King or Taco Bell) at least you won't be getting fooled, although you might be fooling yourself.

I Thank Morgan Spurlock and Here Is Why....

dconley says:

Morgan became what he choose to be( Temp), the same way with choosing what you eat. Who you r, what u r and who u become is the choices you have made

dconley says:

Awesome, he should do other's fast food chain too

rwoman says:

His work is important. Too much of what is reported today is so surface that I am left with more questions than answers

JoanneOtt says:

He did go a bit overboard, but nevertheless, he did show how bad fast food is for us. Although i dont think anyone eats there three times a day every day, too many people eat this kind of junk far too much.

ChrisDay says:

I think he took a HUGE risk. He made the point brilliantly, though.

SuperSize Me: Morgan Spurlock's Movie About McDonald's Poisoning

Morgan Spurlock starts out a perfectly healthy guy, the boyfriend of a vegan chef. After 30 days of eating nothing but McDonald's morning, noon and night, he is a wreck. In fact, two weeks into it his doctors tried to get him to stop.

That's the basic, but you really should see the movie (and read the book) to get the full picture.

A Brilliant Satire of Product Placement
13 March 2011 | by JustCuriosity (United States) - See all my reviews

Morgan Spurlock has delivered a fascinating satire of the process of placing products into movies and the ubiquitous nature of advertising in our society. He takes us inside the process by showing us what it takes to make a movie and to gain corporate sponsorship for it. He allows us to see the process by getting corporations to underwrite his movie about product placement. He uses humor - as he did with fast food in Super Size Me - to point to the insidious way into which advertising has slipped into film-making and become a major part of its profit model of film making. He isn't the first one to do this, of course. Feature films like Thank You for Smoking and The Truman Show have pointed out this phenomenon. Steve Colbert has also does so regularly on his show. Still by putting it into a documentary form, Spurlock has taken the critique to a new level. The sponsoring companies will likely benefit through their association with his humorous critique of corporate America. The movie-going public will benefit if they become more cognizant of the pervasive nature advertising in films. Spurlock has shown us yet again that it is much easier to get the public to listen to critiques our economic system if they are delivered with a good-natured sense of humor.
