Free Photos Online

Photos are vital to your lens or website, but they can be expensive so I'm always on the look out for good sources of reasonably priced photos. MorgueFile is one of my favorite places to find photos on the web. Not only are they mostly free to use provided you attribute them properly, they are beautiful photographs taken by skilled photographers. They are not 'done to death' like so many other sources of photos because not so many people seem to know about MorgueFile, I may be shooting myself in the foot here by bringing it to everyone's attention!

MorgueFile is not just a source of free photos, there is much more. A Classroom with excellent tutorials, an active community with both forum and blog, and you can create your own portfolio to showcase your own work.

Below you will find out more about MorgueFile and some example photos. I will gradually add one for each of the Squidoo Categories, believe me, I am spoiled for choice. You will also find links to the photographers details. I would like to thank them all for the generous sharing of their work.

What is A Morgue File?

Morgue File is an odd name and conjours up all sorts of images. The best description I have come across is actually on the MorgueFile site:-

"A morgue file is a place to keep post production materials for use of reference, an inactive job file. This morgue file contains free high resolution digital stock photography for either corporate or public use.

The term "morgue file" is popular in the newspaper business to describe the file that holds past issues flats. Although the term has been used by illustrators, comic book artist, designers and teachers as well. The purpose of this site is to provide free image reference material for use in all creative pursuits. This is the world wide web's morguefile."

The Classroom

MorgueFile ClassroomOne of the great hidden resources of MorgueFile is The Classroom.

There are loads of tutorials on all aspects of photography - and lively discussions in the forums relating to them as well. Lighting, shutter and aperture speeds, how to photograph moving vehicles, composition, effects, filters, lenses - the list goes on.

The forum and blog are also invaluable resources for any photographer with all kindsof discussion and information. MorgueFile is as much for the photographer as it is for those of us who have an insatiable thirst for good images

Yep it is indeed a brilliant site - and alongside Flickr serves all my 'free' image needs.

It is good of you to make a lense that spreads the word about them, they very much deserve more exposure!

MorgueFile is just brilliant, I think the photos are totally copyright free all you cannot do is resell them?
  • flaminglacer Nov 5, 2010 @ 5:44 pm | delete
More or less, sometimes there are minor restrictions but very few and far between. As a courtesy I always let the photographer know where I have used their photo, and make sure I credit them properly.
