Morkies are the result when a purebred Yorkshire Terrier meets a purebred Maltese...the resulting puppies, sometimes called hybrid or designer dogs , are called Morkies (or Yorktease).

To understand Morkies, it's important to know a bit about their founding stock, Yorkies and Maltese and how their temperaments, characteristics and behaviour influence the resulting blend of the two breeds.

Both Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese have been bred to be active companions in the "toy dog" category and are affectionate and lively little dogs. The Yorkie is a fairly new breed in dog terms, developed in the late 1880s by English and Scottish factory workers who bred them to chase down rats and mice in textile mills and in the coal mines. It was a hard life! The Yorkie needed to be tough, resilient, aggressive and eager to go after prey.

When the grand ladies of London took note of these feisty little dogs a few years later, they moved from factory to the front room, and began to appear as lapdogs to the wealthy. Over time, their size was reduced and they were bred for companionship. However you'll still see Yorkies take off after squirrels, mice and any little furry toys you throw their way!

Yorkies have long, luxurious hair in a range of blacks, browns and golden colours along with what breeders call "steel" or a bluish grey. Their tails are usually docked and their large, triangular ears stick straight up. (You can see more pictures of Yorkies on my lens here)

Maltese on the other hand, have been around for centuries and come from the Mediterranean area where they were bred to be lapdogs pure and simple. The life of luxury ... no chasing rats and mice for Maltese! Maltese are calm and affectionate in nature and often quite playful. Like Yorkies, they're very loyal and love being with their owners. Maltese are easy to identify with their long, flowing pure white hair. In show dogs, this hair which is parted along the spine, actually flows on the ground, although many owners prefer to keep their Maltese's hair short in a cute puppy cut. Maltese have floppy ears and dark, bright eyes.

So your Morkie can be a blend of both breeds physically, and can take on the more aggressive terrier personality or the more laid back Maltese style. Either way, the Morkie is a great little toy dog that will bring you years of joy.

We're telling it like it is: Some terriers are right off the Toddlers & Tiaras TV series... little divas spoiled to death by crazy parents... Not that this is a bad thing :-)

Harnesses are often recommended for both Yorkies and Maltese, who can suffer from a terrible syndrome or hereditary disease called collapsing trachea A good harness instead of a collar, is just one good way to reduce the chances of your Morkie weakening his or her throat and developing this serious problem.
