Welcome to Moscow Idaho (46.73°N 116.99°W)

Nestled on the Palouse of North Idaho, Moscow is the home to the University of Idaho.

Moscow was first settled by white settlers in 1871 and was briefly known as Hog Heaven for the camas that grew here in abundance and loved by the settlers pigs. The name changed to Paradise Valley and in 1875 the town was named Moscow.

The area had been settled long before the white people came. The two tribes in the area are the Nez Perce (Nimíipuu) and the Coeur d'Alenes (Schitsu'umsh).

Spring Valley Reservoir

A great day trip, evening out or a weekend camping, Spring Valley Reservoir is located about 17 miles from Moscow. The reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout and is a great bass fishery. If you like blue gill, you can catch your fill.

Both DH and I like to go out in the evening after work for a relaxing time. Even if we don't catch anything, it is well worth the trip out. There are several fishing docks easily accessible by foot and one that is handicap accessible. The boat launch dock is also a great place for fishing from.

Me and Moscow

Memories

I was born in Moscow as my parents had met here while in school and got married. My dad was in the Navy, so we left while I was still a wee babe in my mother's arms, so my first memories on Moscow were when I was older.

We had come to town to visit an old friend of my Grandmother (who lived in Spokane WA) and it was a dark, rainy day and I was not a happy camper. Face it, what 8 year old wants to visit Grandma's old friends when they didn't have anyone fun to play with and it is too icky outside to do anything. So my earliest memories of Moscow were not positive ones.

Flash forward to just after Jr High and my dad was going back to grad school and decided that the University of Idaho was the place to go. Needless to say, I was a seriously unhappy camper. I was looking forward to attending high school in California with all my friends, I was used to living in and around the Bay area, with so much to so and so much to see and my parents were dragging me to Podunk Idaho!!!!!!!!

So it was with a lot of kicking and screaming on my part we moved to Moscow.

I am afraid to say, my newest impressions of Moscow were not positive. My dad had moved here first and bought a small travel trailer for us to live in while the hunt for a house was on. I had come down with the stomach flu on the trip up and traveling up the old Lewiston Grade, now named the Spiral Highway did not help matters at all.

Things brightened up once we found a house and I started high school. I quickly made friends and discovered Moscow wasn't quite the backward hick town I had thought it was. There is a lot of stuff to do in Moscow: movies, plays (both community and the University), concerts and so many other fun stuff to do.

Moscow is about 100 miles south of Spokane WA and Coeur d'Alene ID where is is more shopping and stuff to do. Coeur d'Alene Lake is great for boating and fishing. Closer to home is Spring Valley Reservoir and both the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. While living here we took full advantage of all the fun the area has to offer.

I very much enjoyed the 2 years of school I had here. It was strange at first, attending a school with so few students ( a few hundred as opposed to the couple thousand of the high school I had been so looking forward to). But when I was dragged back to California (kicking and screaming all the way LOL) I was able to really appreciate living in a small town and attending a school where I knew so many people.

When it came time to pick a college, there was only one choice, the U of I. I applied and was accepted into the Wildland Recreation course thru the College of Forestry and I moed back to Moscow to go to school and I never left :D

University of Idaho

The University of Idaho was founded in 1889 before Idaho was even a state.

I have very fond memories of going to college here. I lived in the dorms the entire time and made a lot of good friends and learned a lot, both school-wise and real world.
