Protecting Mosquitoes From Dangerous Humans, Toxic Sprays, Zappers and Swatters!

I know you are probably asking yourself who on earth would harm such tiny, fairy-like creatures, but sadly, millions of mosquitoes are injured or killed every year by humans.

Our goal at the Mosquito Protection Society is to educate people about how to protect mosquitoes from these violent deaths and to help rehabilitate injured mosquitoes at our sanctuary.

Below you will find easy ways that you can help mosquitoes this summer. The Mosquito Protection Society has provided lifesaving tips, instructions for building your own mosquito habitat, a list of plants to avoid, and a poll to find out how mosquito friendly you really are.

With your help, we can save the skeeters!!

How You Can Help Mosquitoes:

  • Blood Donation - It only takes a few drops to save a life.
  • Avoid using deet based products.
  • Place several water collection containers around your house.
  • Keep your doors wide open during summer months.
  • Plan outdoor activities at dusk.
  • Leave the tent at home and camp under the stars.
  • Learn mosquito first aid.
  • Throw out your citronella candles.
  • Teach your children to live in peace and harmony with mosquitoes.
  • Build a mosquito habitat in your own backyard.
  • Make sure your rain gutters are sufficiently clogged to collect water.
  • Identify and destroy any mosquito toxic plants and herbs in your yard.
  • Do not let larvae eating fish live in your backyard pond.
  • Do not replace ripped or damaged window screens.
  • Eat sugary foods and work up a sweat before going outside.
  • Eliminate the bat population in your neighborhood.
  • Wear dark colored clothing while enjoying the great outdoors.

Hating Mosquitoes Has Become Fashionable

This behavior is sick and disgusting!

Stop The Violence!

With all the hype of the West Nile Virus the mosquito population is even more in danger than ever. We need your support!

Anyone who has ever held the lifeless body of dying mosquito in their hands knows the sadness that swatting and spraying brings. Not to mention the horrors these creatures face when they are zapped to death. We must stop this violence at once and spare these victims of hate crimes from living a life of fear and rejection.

Mosquito Killers Caught In The Act

This is actual footage taken by our undercover mosquito cruelty investigators.

How To Build A Backyard Mosquito Habitat

This is a really fun project to do with your kids!

Here are some great ideas to make a backyard mosquito habitat that will provide loving homes for thousands of itsy bitsy, adorable mosquito larvae. Imagine what fun your kids will have watching them grow and sprout wings.
  • Find any containers that will hold water as these will serve as incubators for your baby mosquitoes. Neat, huh?
  • Carefully place the containers around your home. Areas with tall grass and weeds provide excellent protection from wind.
  • Be sure the containers will collect water from rain, dripping faucets and sprinkler run-off, providing the perfect place for the female mosquito to lay her eggs.
  • You won't have to wait long for the excitement to begin because the larvae hatch from their eggs within 48 hours.
  • The rewards will be plentiful. Female mosquitoes lay between 100-300 eggs at a time.
  • In as little as 14 days you can have an entire mosquito colony thriving in your own backyard!
  • Don't worry about your mosquitoes leaving your carefully structured habitat. They usually remain within 1 mile of their breeding site so you will get the pleasure of their company all summer long.
  • Enjoy!!
  • *Helpful Tip: If you simply do not have a container to hold water in you can still provide a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes by keeping an area of soil damp and moist. They will love it!

Heroic Mosquito Rescue Stories

The citizens featured here have witnessed mosquito cruelty at it's worst and taken the tiny lives into their own hands. They are true heroes!

"Not looking for a Citizen of the Year award, or anything. But last night as I was strolling around the block, I heard the muffled gasps of what I took to be a severely distressed mosquito. Sure enough, there on the sidewalk lay a helpless female struggling to breathe. She'd become disoriented after witnessing the grisly demise of a close friend who'd perished in one of those god-awful electronic zappers. She'd subsequently flown into a lamppost and knocked herself silly. Long story short, I did what any civicminded citizen would do; I performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Soon, she was good as new. She promised she'd remember my act of kindness for the rest of her life...which I think is 24 hours for the average mosquito. I gave her a second chance at life, but she left me with something in return which many might consider even more valuable; she left me with a pair of lips to rival Angelina Jolie's. Which wouldn't be bad except that I'm a guy. Anyone got some ice...?"

Catnip Is A Natural Insect Repellent

Please don't let your cat's addiction cause harm to your beloved mosquitos!

I found some cinnamon and catnip oil recipes that spell disaster for mosquitoes. I only shared them here as a warning of their toxic effects when mixed properly.

How To Make Natural Mosquito Repellent With Cinnamon & Catnip Oil

Add a few drops of cinnamon oil to the lotion or sunscreen of your choice. This will make a safe and natural insect repellent that smells really good too.

TIP:
Combine catnip oil and mosquito oil for a really effective insecticide.

*Do not add too much oil or it might irritate your skin.

How to Make a Natural Mosquito Repellent Spray

Dilute of few drops of cinnamon and/or catnip oil with water for an insect repellent that is safe for children, pets and plants.

Add this mixture to a spray bottle for easy application!

TIP:
This will also kill mosquito larvae.

Please Avoid Using Cinnamon Oil

This stuff smells great but is actually an environmentally friendly pesticide. Yuck!

Cinnamon oil kills mosquito larvae and may act as a repellent against adult mosquitoes.

Cinnamaldehyde is found in cinnamon leaf oil and scientific researchers say that it could be sprayed as a environmentally friendly pesticide. Cinnamaldehyde is commonly used as a food additive and flavoring agent.
