Roach Control

Roaches are tough, they adapt well to a variety of environments and they have been consistently successful in irritating, nettling, infesting and harassing living things--especially people-- for over 300 million years. In short, roaches are not a popular type of insect, and if you, like so many others, want to learn how to get rid of roaches, simply follow these steps:

To kill roaches it is helpful to identify the type of roach that is infesting your home or commercial environment and in addition, identify the roach control products that will most effectively eliminate each type of roach. The following six types of roaches are the most common in the United States:

Roach Identificaiton

American Cockroach

* Other names: Palmetto Bug, Bombay Canary
* Identification: The American Cockroach is reddish-brown, up to 1 1/2 inches long, has wings and is capable of some flight, usually from an upper location to a lower surface. The antennae tend to be extremely long.
* Biology and Habitat: American roaches are common outdoors in landscape plantings, in sewers or storm drain systems, and in lower areas of buildings where moisture may be greater. It may inhabit storm drains in huge numbers, emerging though man-hole covers at night to invade buildings.
* American Cockroach Control: Because American Roaches come from the outside, control should focus on the outside and around the foundation of the structure.

Exclusion
Prevent cockroach entry:

Cockroaches migrate easily through multi-unit dwellings via plumbing and electrical connections. Sealing gaps around plumbing, wall outlets and switch plates will prevent cockroaches from migrating from infested units to others.

Keep doors and windows closed and screened. Also, caulk cracks and gaps that may allow peridomestic cockroaches to invade from outdoors.

Peridomestic cockroaches frequently enter homes by coming up through dry drain traps. Periodically run the water in spare bathrooms, utility tubs and toilets to keep the drain trap filled and off limits to cockroaches.

Fiberglass window screen over vent pipes on the roof will prevent cockroaches from migrating up from sewer connections and gaining access to attics and windows.

Groceries, produce and other packaged food products may have been stored in infested locations before they were purchased. Sa

CockRoach Problem

See what Happens to a Cockroach Infestation

Law student Amita Vasudeva says cockroaches are rampant in the White Hall kitchen and surrounding rooms.

Roach problems pester residents in White Hall
By Karen Feldscher

ousing officials said this week they are determined to curb a cockroach infestation in White Hall, following months of student complaints that the pests have proliferated in a first-floor kitchen and several adjoining rooms.

"Pest control is a serious issue," said John Niven, associate director of residential life. "My goal is to persist until we've got it solved."

Several students living on the first floor of White Hall say there are still cockroaches in the common kitchen area and in some nearby dorm rooms, despite the fact that exterminators have sprayed the kitchen on a regular basis in recent weeks.

"They're still here," said Amita Vasudeva, a first-year law student whose room adjoins the kitchen, and who plans to move out of White Hall along with a fellow student, Christina Rosado, partly because of the cockroach problem. "New signs just went up saying to clean up after yourself in the kitchen, but I think that's the wrong approach."

Vasudeva and several other graduate students said they think the university should do more than just spray periodically and remind students to clean up after themselves. They suggested that extermination should be more extensive, perhaps involving removing cockroach nests from walls.

"Even days they've sprayed my room, there have been cockroaches here," said Vasudeva. "It's disgusting. There was a roach on my pillow. There was a roach in my gym bag. They get into my fridge. I can't even leave a cup of tea in my room for two minutes."

Added Rosado, "They'd spray the kitchen, and they'd go to Amita's room. They'd spray Amita's room, then they'd go to the kitchen. We're paying $600 a month here. It's kind of ridiculous when you think about it."

Students also said they were frustrated that they've had to complain about the roaches again and again, and that the problem persists.

"I don't have time to keep fighting residential life," Vasudeva said. "Otherwise I'd be over there all day long telling them to get rid of the cockroaches. Plus, sometimes I don't even know who to call. There's no one clearly responsible."

Associate residential life director Vengerflutta Smith attributed the cockroach problem, in part, to students not cleaning up after themselves. She added that if students notice the roaches are particularly bad at a given time, they shou
