I have been living in the tropics for the last 28 years and just to let you know that the mosquitoes or the skeeters are the worst pest around here.

Especially when the monsoon season arrive, these little flying dare devils start to go for their hunting trip in swarms. Victims - Human Beings.

You never know that your highly protected feet with thick socks will be crawling with these mosquitoes, they stung you, because they know that you are there, no way to hide..

Well, I simply put my brain to work, and gather a couple of specialists to solve the problem. Of course, there are the chemical base mosquito repellent and insecticides, but that is not what we want.

We want something that is herbal in nature and non toxic and safe for our children to live in. I remember that is 8 years back. Back in 1997, whereby we are simply a group of amatuer chemists, and we go on a quest for the most interesting solution to the mosquito menace.

Back then, there is no Internet. There is only pure experimentation and more experimentations. I remember we flip through many grandmum's herb book, and Chinese medicines books. We tried 301 different experiments using different materials and herbs and methods to cook a final formula for our mosquito solution.

Abstract
Burning mosquito coils indoors generates smoke that can control mosquitoes effectively. This practice is currently used in numerous households in Asia, Africa, and South America. However, the smoke may contain pollutants of health concern. We conducted the present study to characterize the emissions from four common brands of mosquito coils from China and two common brands from Malaysia.

We used mass balance equations to determine emission rates of fine particles (particulate matter < 2.5 µm in diameter ; PM2.5) , polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) , aldehydes, and ketones. Having applied these measured emission rates to predict indoor concentrations under realistic room conditions, we found that pollutant concentrations resulting from burning mosquito coils could substantially exceed health-based air quality standards or guidelines.

Under the same combustion conditions, the tested Malaysian mosquito coils generated more measured pollutants than did the tested Chinese mosquito coils. We also identified a large suite of volatile organic compounds, including carcinogens and suspected carcinogens, in the coil smoke.

In a set of experiments conducted in a room, we examined the size distribution of particulate matter contained in the coil smoke and found that the particles were ultrafine and fine. The findings from the present study suggest that exposure to the smoke of mosquito coils similar to the tested ones can pose significant acute and chronic health risks. For example, burning one mosquito coil would release the same amount of PM2.5 mass as burning 75-137 cigarettes. The emission of formaldehyde from burning one coil can be as high as that released from burning 51 cigarettes. Key words: aldehydes, mosquito coil, PAHs, particulate matter, smoke. "Mosquitoes have their carbon dioxide-sensing neurons in their maxillary palps (specialized sensory organs located on either side of the insect's proboscis, which the female uses to draw blood from her host). Greg Suh, a researcher at the California Institute of Technology whose lab first identified the fruit fly's carbon dioxide-sensitive neurons, believes the locations of the neurons may explain a major behavioral difference between the insect species: "That's maybe the reason why," he speculates, "mosquitoes are attracted to CO2 whereas fruit flies are repelled by it."
Vosshall now wants to disable these receptors--at least in the case of mosquitoes--by developing an effective repellant. The current industry-standard compound in bug spray is DEET but, according to Vosshall, no one knows exactly how it works. She believes that her lab will be able to improve on DEET by inhibiting GPRGR22 and GPRGR24.
"Whatever we devise would need to be safe, cheap & so that it can be used in the developing world," Vosshall says. "They would have to be the kinds of molecules that would sit safely on your skin, but also form a cloud around you and act on the mosquitoes that are about to bite you."
With the fast evolution of mosquitoes, toxic repellent and killer no longer appear to be effective against mosquitoes.
Between, what Vosshall has mention is true. Only when the mosquito cannot detect human being, human being becomes invisible to mosquitoes, thus we are safe from the menace.
